New Appliance Can Predict Earthquakes Almost 100% of the Time

A Few Seconds Warning is All You Would Need Before a Major Quake Hits so You Can Find a Place to Hide. A Japanese Company Has Designed a Gadget that Will Warn You Just in Time

AN EARTHQUAKE DETECTOR IN YOUR KITCHEN
The security firm SunShine Co. Ltd. has developed a new home appliance the size of a paperback that will be able to use data obtained from Japan's Meteorological Agency (JAMA) via the internet, that will go directly into the home unit and warn any occupant of an imminent earthquake, no matter the magnitude.

The appliance will emit a loud warning that lasts for 20 seconds so that you will be able to hide under a desk or table and turn off the gas from your fireplace or stove to prevent a more horrible disaster condition than if you did not have this device. This device will be available to customers in Japan only for the time being, and they will also be able to pick up the JAMA warnings on their mobile phones as well.

THE JAPANESE WILL BE EARTHQUAKE AWARE 24-7
The president of SunShine Co. Ltd. has stated that he believes that if a Japanese family is not watching television or listening to the radio, they still need a device that will warn them of an eminent earthquake no matter what. This new device is just what he was hoping for when it came to developing a small appliance that will give ample warning when another earthquake hits Japan in the near future.

Japan accounts for more than 20 percent of the world's quakes that register a magnitude of at least a level 6 or greater, so they are the country that is in greater need of this device than any other. The appliance will send the earthquake alert once it actually detects the first waves of a quake that does not cause major rattling that you can hear, but does travel much faster than the secondary waves that will come later that will be extremely loud to the naked ear.

THE GADGET WILL BRING REAL VALUE TO THE JAPANESE COMMUNITY
Yoshinori Sugihara, who is the head of JEITA's Emergency Earthquake Alert and Trial Period has stated that this new appliance will provide real value in informing the Japanese community of an imminent earthquake and should allow precious seconds of time for families to huddle together and get out of the way of dangerous and heavy material that could fall on them and crush their bodies in a matter of moments.

The Japanese authorities had already put a similar earthquake warning system in place when it came to giving this information to construction site personnel and emergency workers in the Japanese government, but had felt like the warning devices might set off needless panic to the millions of people that live in Japan if the warning was not 100% accurate.

The Japanese authorities now feel that the error ratio for false warnings is low enough at the current time to now allow these devices to be sold in stores throughout Japan and the surrounding areas.

In 1995, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 hit central Japan. The quake cost the Japanese government more than $100 billion in total damages and resulted in the deaths of at least 6,400 Japanese citizens.
