Respen-A Now Receives Recognition in the Autism Community for Its Benefits

Debbie
It is being called the exciting new treatment therapy for those patients with autism spectrum. It is yielding remarked benefits for autism regarding language delay, socialization, cognitive dysfunction and self-stimulatory behavior. Respen-A has actually been available on the market since 2008, however, just currently it is becoming one of the fast interest medications on the market especially among the autism community with its remarked benefits.

What exactly is Respen-A

Respen-A is a small disc which is around the size of the nickle coin. It is a homeopathic topical treatment which is applied to the skin just once each day for twelve hours. Basically, you apply the disc to skin in the daytime so by night time (twelve hours later) it is removed.

Contained within the disc is the ingredient reserpine in a very small dose. This ingredient aides in activating the enzyme Monoamine Oxidase A (MAO-A) which is found in the body. This particular enzyme aides in metabolizing three main neurotransmitters named histamine, serotonin and nerepinephrine. In autism, serotonin becomes greatly affected which produces negative results like poor mood regulation and tantrums. It also ends up affecting fine motor skills, self-regulation issues and even sensory imbalances like those of touch and sound.

Reserpine is acknowledged as a MAO-A antagonist which in basic translation means stimulates MAO-A activity and by performing this action it aides in converting serotonin into active aldehyde form that is referred to as 5-hydroxyindoleacetaldehyde (5-HIAL) complexes with post-synaptic serotonin receptor which effects the physiological effects of serotonin.

Reserpine is derived from an Indian herb called Rauwolfia serpentina commonly called snake root. The FDA in 155, had granted approval for reserpine to treat hypertension at a dose of 0.1- 0.5 mg. The amount of reserpine which is in Respen-A is only 0.1 mg, which is roughly about ten to fifty times less than had been used in other forms of reserpine products.

Respen-A had first came into light in 2008 as a likely therapy for autism related disorders. The incentive for this therapy had came from research which was published in 1957 in the Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease. A study had been conducted using reserpine in a group of autistic children using an oral medicine with a dosage of three to seven milligrams which is greatly higher than what is contained in Respen-A. The findings had found the children to have improvements in verbal communication, eye contact, decrease self stimulatory behavior, improvements in willingness to play and socialize along with general awareness. These are the same improvements seen in autistic children using Respen-A therapy.

Respen- A therapy seems to aide two main areas the most which are speech and vocalization problems. However, other areas related to autism as noted above can also see improvement with the therapy. Parents have noted that their childrens has become more purposeful and deliberate. Children are becoming more socially area of other children around them with adults as well. They are happy to be interacting and moods have seen improvement.

Side Effects

As with any medication used there are side effects which do present themselves. The side effects from Respen-A therapy have been noted as minimal and easily handled.

Currently according to information the only side effect which has been reported in children with autism is increased motor activity such as hyperactivity especially if Respen-A is used with antidepressants. This side effect has been remedied by either discontinuing or decreasing the antidepressants or decreasing Respen-A.

In addition when using Respen-A calcium supplementation is required to aide in prevention of irritability which could occur due to the fact reserpine has a proneness to decrease blood calcium levels by slight amounts. Also it is required that those taking Respen-A consume protein each day such as fish, chicken, beef or take an amino acid supplement like 5-HTP to help restore serotonin due to MAO-A activity. In general the side effects of Respen-A are minor and can be easily taken care of with the above mentioned steps.

Respen-A therapy appears to be greatly beneficial for those with autism spectrum disorders.

Other noteworthy facts on Respen-A

Body weight has no bearing on the dosage.

The disc is placed on the child's trunk of their body. Most common place for disc placement has been between the shoulder blades so the child cannot remove it.

To achieve the best effect of Respen-A, a low calcium dose of 2,000 mg of elemental calcium taken with breakfast is recommended. Dividing the dose of calcium has been shown to be less beneficial than taking it all at once during breakfast. Calcium must be taken with food for proper absorption and preferred is saturated fat.

Best results for Respen-A have also been demonstrated by giving the child calcium first. If symptoms such as aggression, irritability, then child may need calcium supplement at least one hour prior to using Respen-A. Also, calcium carbonate is easy to absorb than calcium citrate.

High doses of vitamin D may affect the effectiveness of Respen-A therefore, no more than 400 IUD should be taken daily which is the same amount in multivitamins.

Oils such as fish, flax seed, primrose, cod liver and so forth could hamper the effects of Respen-A. It is suggested that the child not consume oil and have a serving of fish weekly.

Turmeric also supplements should also not be used they too can hamper the effects.

The only dietary suggestion is that children consume at least one serving of meat daily for best results. If the child cannot consume meat then L-Tryptohan supplement be taken daily. If 5-HTP is used instead then it will be have to be administered three to four times daily.

When kept stored in original packaging Respen-A carries a shelf life of 120 days.

Once the disc has been activated for twenty to twenty-four hours it is then suggested the disc be placed on the child in the morning and removed at bedtime. If child wishes to go swimming or take a bath, remove disc and place in zip lock baggie. When child is dry, replace the disc.

Most insurance companies will now cover Respen-A. Included in the medication is a universal claim form in which the pharmacist fills out with your prescription. You will have to fill out any additional information and send to your insurance claims department.
