I'm not sure why, but stories involving different species, cultures, practices, always seem to focus on the human point of view. Aliens, or whatever thing is on the receiving end of the boom stick are always more something or less something than humans. They are either smarter, less emotional, display more clan like behavior or form secret societies where no homo sapiens sapiens may join or where they will be the subject of some kind of plot.
If humans are not compared to anything, like some kind of science fiction control group, they are always made to reflect upon themselves. There will always be someone comparing humanity to something or other and reflect on how we fair compared to that.
The laborious point I'm trying to get to is that humans take way too much space in stories. Now, Strarcraft 2 is equally about the Zerg, the Protoss and the Terrans, but, watching the trailer, it would be difficult to notice.
See, Starcraft was always about a conflict between the invading Zerg, the almost divine Protoss and the new comer Terran forces. Prying into the the hive mind of the Zerg and unmasking the rich Protoss lore was something story oriented player such as me kept playing. Kerrigan transformation into the half Zerg, half human Queen of Blades was even an original and interesting way into the inner working of the Zerg.
But now, after watching Blizzard's trailer for Starcraft 2, I can't help but feel like I am watching Transformers. Protoss are barely showed, Zerg are somewhat present, but only used as a frame for Kerrigan and Terran are carrying the whole story. I understand that the main issue has always been Kerrigan and her relationship with Terrain forces, but in a story as massive as 3 species fighting in an interstellar war, is there not a way to make a trailer that will show a bit more than a few humans talking about human issues?
Blizzard's Starcraft 2 is due to come out on July 27, 2010. Whatever my impressions are of the trailer so far, I am forced to admit that the game will have many, many players lavishing it with praises. The hype is so strong that one has to admit that whatever opinions circulate around the trailer, none of them, no matter how negative, or positive will deter the almost fanatical following Starcraft has always had.
