New Books of Interest by Women: Katie Couric, Meghan O'Rourke & Sister Souljah

Julia Bodeeb
Reading is one of the great pleasures in life. Summertime is a great time to find some time to relax and do some reading. There are so many new books it is hard to decide what to read. However, I've picked a few new books by women that I know I want to read. Perhaps you will enjoy hearing about them too.

"The Best Advice I Ever Got"

This book of quotes is compiled by Katie Couric. "The Best Advice I Ever Got" has quotes from Eric Schmidt (of Google), Maya Angelou, Mario Batali, Apolo Ohno and others.

This book would be a great graduation gift for a high school or college student. It would also be a great motivational book to keep in a home office or library. It is great when people share their wisdom with others. This book will probably provide some insight into the lives of people working in varied careers.

"The Long Goodbye" by Meghan O'Rourke

This book describes the journey through the illness of a mother, her death, and the daughter's mourning process. The author of this book, Meghan O'Rourke, is a poet and has also been on staff at the New Yorker and the Paris Review, notes the NY Times.

"The Long Goodbye" may be helpful to those who have been through the loss of a mother as well as those facing it in the future. Life transitions are always helped along by someone who has been through the experience and has written a book about it.

Sister Souljah: " Midnight and the Meaning of Love"

Sister Souljah has a new book out. She spent time living in numerous countries to prepare to write her new novel called "Midnight and the Meaning of Love." This book describes the lives of two people who moved to America from Japan and Africa, notes the Los Angeles Times.

This book will probably be a fascinating read. It is always interesting to learn about why someone left their homeland to start a life in the United States. Also, reading about how people from other places analyze our society and build their lives and relationships here is always eye opening. Reading about how immigrants adapt to life here gives us a new perspective on our melting pot of a country.

Souljah's novel "The Coldest Winter Ever" was a great read in 1999. It is full of realism and quite eye opening. I've been out of touch with her writing since then. This new book sounds fabulous.
