New Fiction and Current Events

With gasoline prices reaching all time highs, more Americans are opting for a book that can be enjoyed over several days over a two hour movie. According to Publishers Weekly, the books slated for fall publication are many and run the gamut from new cookbooks to tell-all tomes and gay literature. Topping the list, however, is fiction. New fiction abounds in the upcoming lists from publishers large and small.

Look for new works by bestselling authors that include the prolific Dean Koontz, E.L. Doctorow, Scott Turow, Candace Bushnell, and many others. Author and Catholic priest Andrew Greely's latest Nuala Ann McGrail novel in his continuing series about the fey Irish singer will appear, titled "Irish Crystal". Historical time travel writer Diana Gabaldon continues her life long love story between Jacobite Jamie Fraser and 20th century physician Claire Beauchamp in "A Breath of Snow And Ashes" which brings the couple into the American Revolutionary War.

Other new fiction includes a look at an Italian family in the 1950's, "The Saint of Lost Things" by Christopher Castellani and the 1918 Influenza Epidemic is portrayed in "Wickett's Remedy" by Myla Goldberg. Popular women's fiction writer Anne Rivers Siddons returns with a tale of three best friends in "Sweetwater Creek".

Look for these and other fiction titles in coming months. If true stories and non-fiction tales are what a reader seeks, the fall list is filled with books on various aspects of the Iraq War, including "Hidden Homefront: True Stories of the Wives Left Behind When American Goes to War" by Kristin Henderson. Other works feature inside looks at the ongoing conflict and views for and against the war. Works on President Bush and his family are numerous - some salute him as the finest Conservative president in recent history while others are Bush bashing tomes, inspired by Kitty Kelly's Bush family biography from last year.

The late Johnny Carson and the late John Lennon are just a few of the celebrities whose lives are examined or given an inside look in new books this season. In the category of Gay/Lesbian, a new sub-category within literature, look for new works that include "The Whole World Was Watching: Living In The Light of Matthew Shepherd" by Romaine Patterson and Patrick Hinds.

As Americans curl up with a good book this season, the choices will be many and the subject matter varied.

I still go to movies, but I do love books. I've found some of the Booker nominated titles this year to be very, very good - The Secret Scripture, Sea of Poppies, and I even loved The Enchantress of Florence, a book that many didn't like.
