New Buffy the Vampire Slayer Movie in Works: No Joss Whedon or the Scooby Gang

Blasphemy or a Cool New Take on an Old Canon?

ADSpencer
The minds behind the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie (1992) have decided that the time is right to revamp the Buffy canon. Maybe it was the new Star Trek's re-casted blockbuster, though all signs seem to be pointing more directly at a little franchise called Twilight. The vampire has always been a horror icon in the land of cinema but love for the beautifully undead has been picking up steam over the past few years. With this in mind, the producers of the movie and Fran Rubel Kuzui, director of the original movie, are wanting to put together a new image for Buffy and a theatrical release. The new movie will not be a prequel or sequel to the original movie or related to the television series.

There's no news on who will be playing the new Buffy, though it has been made clear that Sarah Michelle Gellar (Prinze) will not be returning to the franchise. The reason that the new Buffy movie is going to be different from what fans might be expecting is the same reason it cannot be compared with the 2009 Star Trek vision. The new cannon will not simply be a recasting but a re-creating of an image. The characters introduced in the television series will be sadly absent; perhaps an odd move considering that a love affair between Buffy (a mortal) and Angel (a soulful vampire) would probably appeal to teen fans of Twilight and The Vampire Diaries. Undead lover? Nope. No Xander, Willow, or Giles--aka, the Scooby Gang? Nada. What about the mastermind behind the hit TV series and the scriptwriter for the original Buffy movie, Joss Whedon? No, no, no. In fact, the latest report is that Whedon, months after news of the new movie broke, was asked to participate and said no. What remains of Buffy when we take away these elements of the canon? Well, we have a cheerleader who will hopefully be witty and able to kill the undead. No word yet on if characters from the original movie will be returning (read: Pike, the rebel turned Buffy's boyfriend).

To say that the absence of Whedon has caused a heated debate amongst Buffy fans would be a huge understatement. Fans are firing off their dislike for a new movie without the original cast or character concept. Judging from hundreds of comments on forums for the new Buffy movie, those who only enjoyed the Buffy movie are pleased to see the revamping; however, fans of the series are worried that they won't see even a grain of the old Buffy in the new movie.

My advice for Fran Kuzui? Tread lightly. Whedonites are dangerous and lurking around every theater, waiting to see the new movie fail due to a lack of lovable characters. Perhaps, when the movie's new concept is further explored and if Kuzui is able to find a writer able capture Buffy's voice, the anger will begin to turn to excitement. Until that time, however, it seems that a majority of old fans are calling this movie in the making blasphemy.

Total blasphemy. Production companies need to learn that it's the stories and characters that draw an audience, not the name. They need to quit using names of beloved shows and films to trick people into watching unimaginative "re-creations."

If you have no scooby then no viewers dont compete with twilight plus i will tell no one about the film if there is no smg and the scobies

Okay people, first off you have to realize, if Buffy were EVER to come back with SMG and Whedon, it would take place after whatever whedon has planned in season 8. YES there is a season 8, in comic form... BY WHEDON, using the likeness of ALL characters, including SMG, the scoobies, faith, angel, and cordelia. its VERY good, but unless you are a DIE HARD fan and keep up with the comics, then a big screen movie by Whedon would probably throw you off anyways. However, i WILL NOT watch this new reboot. whats the point? new season 8 comics are STILL being produced. so with Sarah Michelle Gellar being used as the likeness for Buffy TO THIS DAY, how the hell can they make a reboot, with anybody Other than smg? Ill stick with the continuation in comic form, and PRAY for a Buffy movie by Whedon with SMG.

im not waching this. No Joss, No Buffy. The people who are making this movie made the first one crap. This one will be to. I need my original characters!! I need Joss Whedon to make it! They're just going to look really stupid when they put this into theaters, like their competing with Twilight.

There is no way that I'm going to watch this. How can you have a movie without those who have played the characters we know and loved for 7 seasons? None of the actors that played these roles will appear in the movies? This is a big mistake and most likely will bomb. Hopefully Joss Whedon will come around and take over what will be a complete tragedy. And enlist the actors that played these characters.

This is a freaking atrocity. Here I've been watching Buffy and Angel reruns with the smallest gleaming hope that a continuation was maybe possible. I might sound a little on the fan freak side but I was overjoyed when Joss Whedon continued into the eighth season in graphic novel form. I've loved everything that Joss Whedon has put out there; Buffy, Angel, Firefly, and the Dollhouse, etc. With out his input or writing what the heck is the point. It will be a mere shadow of its predecessor. Like here look at the shiny title and walk on in...don't worry that its not really the Slayer...or anything remotely close. Is it to much to have continuity as long as the actors and writer/director are still all breathing. Le sigh...I best step off my soapbox before I fall.

I agree, guys. I hope this idea gets flushed.

No originals what are you people thinking no real Buffy fan is going to want to go see that its going to blow

This is the worst idea ever!!!

I never saw the movie, but watched the show from time to time. I'm not too thrilled about a new movie in the works. Too many things have been remade lately, and most have been poor to average (Transformers: original was fine, Revenge of the Fallen looked bad. GI Joe didn't look like that great. Land of the Lost looked bad. I'm thinking there is more, but can't think of them right now.)
