New Cameras Show Interstate Traffic Conditions Along Interstate 95 and 395 Corridors
Images Available On-line and by Cell Phone
You wished that you could have seen the highway in advance so you could have taken the back roads.
However, seeing live traffic conditions is as simple as checking your computer or cell phone thanks to 40 recently installed traffic cameras along Interstate 95 between exit 56 in Branford and exit 82 in Groton and Interstate 395 between exit 79 in Montville and exit 82 in Norwich.
The cameras provide footage of three important highway interchanges: Route 9 and I-95 in Old Saybrook, I-95 and I-395 in East Lyme, and I-395 and Route 2 in Norwich.
These cameras, which look like black domes, are attached to 70-foot white poles and images from them are monitored by Connecticut Department of Transportation staff members.
They have the capability to zoom in or out onto a particular area or change the direction the camera is pointing.
When there is a delay, they can send information onto recently installed overhead electronic message signs along the highway and broadcast it on the highway advisory radio 1610 AM.
The newest cameras, which cover a 50-mile stretch of two interstate highways, are located throughout New Haven, Middlesex, and New London counties can be viewed at www.TrafficLand.com.
That stretch, from west to east, consists of one camera in Branford east of Leets Island Road and eight cameras in Guilford located at Granite Road, Moose Hill Road, mile marker 59, Route 1 (exit 57), Route 77 (exit 58), mile marker 60.8, Goose Lane (exit 59), and East River Road.
Madison's six cameras are located at Wildwood Avenue, Mungertown Road (exit 60), Copes Road, Durham Road (exit 61), Anchorage Road (near exit 62), and the Madison Service Area.
Six cameras in Clinton provide views at mile marker 67, Cow Hill Road, High Street (exit 63), Liberty Street, mile marker 70, and Horse Hill Road (exit 64).
Three traffic cameras in Old Saybrook show conditions at Elm Street (southbound exit 67), Route 154 (northbound exit 67), and south of the Route 9 (exit 69) on-ramp near Baldwin Bridge.
Old Lyme is home to three cameras located at the Route 156 connector (northbound exit 70), Route 1 (southbound exit 70), and at Four Mile River Road (exit 71).
In East Lyme, two cameras are located at the Route 161 connector (exit 74) and Route 1 (exit 75).
Waterford's four cameras are located at the I-395 northbound on-ramp (exit 76), north of Oil Mill Road (exit 80), Vauxhall Street (exit 82A), and Briggs Street (exit 83).
New London's one camera shows traffic south of the Gold Star Bridge (exit 83) while Groton's one camera shows Route 184, north of the bridge (exit 86).
Interstate 395's five cameras are located in Montville and Norwich.
Two cameras in Montville, located at the Montville Rest Area and at Fitch Hill Road, monitor traffic on both sides of Route 2A (exit 79A), an exit used to access the casinos.
Three cameras in Norwich are located on both sides of Route 82 (exit 80) and south of Route 2 (exit 81).
Other recently installed cameras are along Route 8 between exit 25 and 29 in Waterbury and Naugatuck.
While the recent camera installations provide a new service for the area, those travelling along Interstate 95 between Greenwich and Branford have had traffic cameras for a number of years.
Other highways in Connecticut with traffic cameras include Route 2, Interstate 84, Route 8, and Interstate 91.
Images from those cameras are available at the DOT Web site, www.ct.gov/dot.
