New Categories Should Be Added to Emmy Awards

The Emmy Awards are now over and the show itself was better than usual. That being said there are some improvements that could be made to the Emmy Awards and most of the possible improvements are with the awards. There are some new Emmy Awards that should be added.

New Emmy Award Categories: Cable vs. Network

The first change to the Emmy Awards should be to separate cable television shows from the Network Television shows. Cable television has a sizable advantage over network television shows because of the luxury of being less lenient when it comes to sex, violence and swearing. Cable shows are always going to be grittier and that will make them seem better in a lot of cases. A few years from now it is unlikely there will be dramas on the big networks competing with the dramas from cable television.

New Emmy Award Categories: Young Actor Award

The Academy Awards are bad about honoring young deserving actors but at least a Keira Knightley, Carey Mulligan or Ryan Gosling slips in every once in a while. The Emmy Awards are even worse. How many actors under 25 can you think of that have been nominated for an Emmy Award. Friday Night Lights and Parenthood are just a couple of shows with some good young actors and the award could even branch out and reward programs from networks that don't get noticed like ABC Family and the CW.

New Emmy Award Categories: Best Cast

Sometimes a television program has one outstanding performance like House or Dexter and then other programs have a very good all around cast but not necessarily an individual performance worth an award. These shows should get rewarded with a best cast award.

New Emmy Award Categories: Best Cooking Show

It's great that Top Chef finally won the Best Reality Competition Series but that's the tip of the iceberg when it comes to shows about food. Television viewers love to watch shows about food and it's about time they got awarded.

New Emmy Award Categories: Best Historical Show

There are a lot of interesting shows about history but really I want to see this category just so that the Deadliest Warrior can win an Emmy.
