They thought they could sell puppies and rescue dogs at the same time. Until one day, a gentleman came in looking for a "Min-Pin" puppy. They did not have one at the moment, but they were fostering one for a rescue group. He was not interested because the dog was bigger and older than he wanted. His attitude changed once he met her and played with her. Then, he learned how she was saved from death row and the record number of dogs being put to death. He decided to adopt her. Today she is being treated like a princess!
That was the day, Elizabeth Correa, the owner, realized that as long as they sold high end, expensive puppies dogs the little orphans wouldn't stand a chance to find good homes. She needed to provide a way to find homes for these innocent dogs.
Elizabeth has worked hard at creating a special warm environment for the dogs. Her vision is that this environment will help everyone feel comfortable about adopting a pet. Unfortunately, many shelters leave potential pet owners feeling depressed and powerless. Her operation is a clean, good smelling place where each puppy gets one on one time in order to help socialize them for their future families.
Nationwide, only 20 per cent of pets are adopted from shelters. Elisabeth has created a feeling of hope and inspiration in her shop. She will have both pure breed and designer breeds for adoption.
This is a huge risk for her as a business, it will change Gigi & Luca forever. Elizabeth says this decision comes from their hearts, however, and they remain completely focused on the same great customer service and product selection their customers have always enjoyed. They know with your support, this change will be a positive one for them as a business, for you as customers and for many rescue dogs in our community.
Although they would love to give away dogs there will be a nominal adoption fee to cover the enormous costs of caring, feeding and providing medical care for each dog.
They will be working with several licensed shelters in the area to select the rescues to place in the store. They are NOT becoming a shelter and will not be taking strays or other homeless dogs directly from individuals. Instead, they will work closely with licensed partners to take in rescue pets, have them spayed and neutered and treated for any medical needs. Before they arrive at Gigi & Luca, the dogs will be cleared for kennel cough, fleas or other common "shelter" aliments and be ready for immediate adoption.
In the last few months, they've watched their customers fall in love with the rescues they are saving and they know this is the right move to make. You can come in, hours are Monday through Saturday 10-5 and see the pups that are up for adoption. They are an ever changing group of wonderful little dogs looking for a home. Each is in a nice clean cage, with their own bed, dish and toys, just waiting to be chosen.
Every animal deserves to have a wonderful life . They don't want much-just food and water in their bowls, a soft spot to lay on and a gentle loving hand to let them know they are safe. In return, they give love unconditionally. How can we refuse to help them? They hope that you believe as much as theydo that one person can really make a difference.
They cannot do this alone. They need help and support and the word spread. They could also use volunteers to walk the dogs, donations of gently used leashes, collars, toys and beds would help and supporting the store by shopping for pet supplies there.
They want to thank all the wonderful customers who have purchased puppies from them, for their trust and for giving them wonderful homes. TheyI hope you understand and support their decision and think of Gigi & Luca rescue dogs the next time you want to bring another fur baby into your life.
