New England Summer

Cathy A Montville

I look forward to summer. For a short spell, I do not have to climb six foot snow banks to get to the grill. Yes, I barbeque throughout the winter; albeit sporting mittens, mukluks, and other cumbersome snow gear. Summer represents various things to people. This poem reflects some of the things I embrace during the summer season.

Summer is...

Bikinis and flip flops and blingy sunglasses
Chimnea fires, expensive beach passes
Straw hats and seagulls, giant tote bags
Plant bedecked porches, American flags

Sweet fire flies and gross scary bugs
Skunks in the yard and slimy slugs
Sizzling hot days and long sultry nights
Ice cream, water guns, lemonade, and kites

Spicy sun dresses and fiesta skirts
Brats on the grill, blueberry desserts
Pool party blast and water balloons
Pampering naps in the afternoon

Secrets shared on moonlit walks
I (heart) Mark in purple chalk
Raccoons and owls and lemon ice tea
A shady spot that gladdens me

Chilled wine spritzers and frosty ale
Hammock time and hiking trails
Thunderstorms and lights gone out
Finally catching that Rainbow Trout

Kids shooting hoops and playing baseball
Summertime kisses fondly recalled
Gardens brimming with colors bold
Nary a sign now...of winter's cold

Summer is...

Great depiction of summer! On the side note, BBQ throughout winter sounds fun too! I love BBQ's.

I love this! I would "heart" you in purple chalk, but there doesn't seem to be any around here . . .
