New Federal Tobacco Tax Means Michigan Smokers Getting Double Taxed
How Michigan Smokers Will Be Affected by a Double Tax on Tobacco
Federal tobacco tax increases:
Large cigar tax will go up to about 40 cents per cigar from a nickel per cigar.
Small cigar tax will go up to a $1 per pack from 4 cents.
Pipe tobacco tax from $1.10 per pound to $2.83 per pound.
Chewing tobacco tax from 19.5 cents to 50.3 cents per pound.
Snuff tax from 53.5 cents to $1.51 per pound.
Loose tobacco tax (roll your own) from $1.10 to $24.78 per pound.
In a recent Detroit News article by Chris Christoff, it was noted that Michigan's Governor Granholm also wants to double the Michigan state tax on all tobacco products. (This is except for the already in place $2 per pack manufactured cigarette tax.) These new taxes are being implemented to help balance next years dismal state budget. Once the Legislature approves this, the tobacco items tax will jump from 32% to 64% on wholesale prices.
In Michigan, the folks that roll their own will be getting hit the hardest. With the combined Federal and state tax, the average price of popular rolling tobacco will go up from about $20 per one pound bag to $70 per bag. This will change the total price for rolling your own quite substantially. The current cost for rolling your own is about $1 per pack when buying a one pound bag of tobacco. Once all the taxes go into effect, the price will jump to about $3 per pack.
So what happens now is still unclear. The tobacco shop retailers in Michigan are expecting a large decline in business. Rolling tobacco use has been picking up steadily over the past several years due to the past cigarette tax hikes. Another tax hike will probably increase the amount of traffic to neighboring states where the cigarette taxes are lower and the prices per pack make it economical to stock up and bring them back. Smuggling cigarettes increased substantially with the last large tax hike, and is expected to do the same this time around. Also, an expensive boost to people's willpower should cause a lot of folks to drop the habit once and for all. With the cost of a pack of cigarettes going to about $6 per pack in Michigan, time will tell if a 50% savings with roll your own supplies will bring in as much revenue as 80% savings did. Or will so many people quit that the increased tax revenues are offset by those dropping the habit completely? We should know sometime next year.
Thanks for reading.

Post a Commentis it legal to walk on the side of the road and smoke in Cadillac MI
I'm 53 and have smoked all my life and can't quit. I'm on Disability and was rolling my own cigarettes untill the price went up. I've had to give up auto collision insurance to fit smoking into my budget. It cost me $240 a month to smoke which is what I pay for groceries per month. There is something wrong there. I wish I could sue the government for doing this to smokers.
if it is illegal how many people would make and sale their own. The government is making a profit off of your vices because you have lack of self control
Such BS. I use to be able to smoke in hopitals, as a patient and on planes. Now, I can't even smoke in my own car. Make it illegal already, insTead of taxing the hell out of us. iT IS THE ONLY KNOWN SUBSTNCE THAT IS LEGAL THAT HAS NO GOOD PURPOSE. Make it illegal.
i think this tax is stupid i use all different types of tobacco and i enjoy doing it!!! If they need to raise money they can take it out of their own high paying jobs. Just think trying to raise money but you will put almost all the tobacco companies out of business and more unemployment this is the dumbest idea since prohibition!!
Open Letter to our Government.
Why may I ask, are you taking aim only at the smokers for your tax increase? There are other products that cause cancer. The number of people who are over weight in this county is astounding. Why don't you put a big tax hike on fast food take out's for contributing to the excessive weight gain in our country? Being over weight I have heard on CNN is worse than smoking!
Why don't you put a big tax hike on soda? That product is not healthy. Then there are Candy bars, children's cereal loaded with sugar, unsafe diet products, to name only a few of the other products out in the market place that we have been told cause cancer and obesity, resulting in high health care costs. If we smokers are so heavily taxed they should also be paying for their unhealthy, contributions to man kind in the form of taxes. What's good for the goose is good for the gander!
I think it is very unconstitutional for the government to force the citizens of this nation to give up
Time to quit
talk about beating up on those least able to pay these new taxes: Loose tobacco tax (roll your own) from $1.10 to $24.78 per pound. (2,152.73% increase) ... that's worse than the extortion on those who _can_ pay, those AIG non-smokering bonus-babies.
Thanks for the advice. Really appreciate it.
Granholm suck's! She expects Smokers to pay off the michigan debt? Non Smokers don't have to pay any of that debt at all! This is ridiculous and one sided. If you work hard and are lower income and the only part of life you enjoy is a cocktail and a smoke were going to tax you to death.
Michigan needs to get rid of Granholm! I'm already looking for work and moving out of this State. She has totaly Ruined it for Michigan
