New Fishing Book a Must Read for Carolina Anglers

North Carolina fishing enthusiasts are about to get a great tool to help them in their angling endeavors. Veteran outdoors writer Mike Marsh is publishing a new book called "Fishing North Carolina" which is going to be a must read for any angler who loves fishing this state.

Mike Marsh is one of the premier outdoors writers in the Carolinas. His magazine and newspaper articles were part of the inspiration that led me to start writing about fishing. He has long published detailed and creative fishing stories that give readers the two things they most want from a fishing article: he tells you how he did it and he tells you how you can do it.

Mike's articles on inshore fish such as speckled trout, redfish, flounder, as well as our state's freshwater species, have earned him many awards from organizations such as the Southeastern Outdoor Press Association and the Outdoor Writers Association of America.

His fishing adventures were collected together in two great saltwater books that he published a few years ago: "Inshore Angler" and "Offshore Angler" which are among the best books out there for Carolina fishermen.

Mike's new book "Fishing North Carolina" is going to be released next Saturday, February 12, and will be his most comprehensive work yet, examining both saltwater and freshwater fishing and giving detailed information about all of NC's lakes, rivers, inlets, and ocean fishing areas.

After its release "Fishing North Carolina" by Mike Marsh will be available in our Carolina bookstores and tackles shops. But you can pre-order one directly now from Mike by going online at http://mikemarshoutdoors.com.

Mike told me he spent four years on the book doing research and field work, and that he organized it as something of an encyclopedia of fishing and angling spots in NC.

"One in every eight person in NC has a fishing license," Marsh said. "There is no angler in the state that can't benefit from this book. No matter where you live in the state you'll be able to find information about the fish and the fishing access in your area. It's really a catch-all book for NC fishing."

The new book covers over 100 different bodies of water in the state, from park millponds to each and every beach fishing pier, and includes all that readers need to know about planning a complete trip. Mike takes the time to detail helpful information about parking, camping facilities, boat rentals, and bank and pier access.

He also goes into detail about all of the top fishing locations in NC, including information on lakes, rivers, and waterways such as depth, shoreline and bottom characteristics, water quality and special area regulations.

There are more than 60 maps in "Fishing North Carolina" describing water access, the location of boat ramps, and also specific fishing spots. There is a separate section that gives you in-depth information on how to catch more than 50 different saltwater and freshwater fish species that we have in NC.

I just had to ask Mike what his own personal favorite fish to target was. He took a little while with the answer.

"It'd have to be flounder," he said. "When I go out just for a day of fun flounder fishing is a great challenge. It is a wonderful and relaxing kind of fishing."

Although Mike's book will be of great interest to experienced anglers who want to get their hands on all the information he has collected, Mike says he hopes his book speaks to the younger generation and the upcoming anglers of the future as well.

"Fishing helps build confidence in a young person," he said, "in addition to letting them see that food doesn't just come from a grocery store. Unlike competitive sports that kids might grow out of, learning how to fish will give you an outdoor sport you can participate in for the rest of your life."

Mike says that when he was 37 years old he re-dedicated his life to being a full-time outdoors writer. His success has been the result of a lot of hard work, a lot of research, and, of course, a lot of hunting and fishing all over North Carolina.

"I was always a good storyteller," said Mike, "so one day I just started writing it down. This is my fourth book and it is very comprehensive about fishing in this state. Hopefully it will help some people from the professional anglers who want to scout a body of water to someone who just wants to know the right way to fish at the nearest lake or beach."

To me, the greatest pleasure of writing is not what it's about, but the inner music the words make. ~Truman Capote, McCall's, November 1967
