New Golf Club Grips During the Off Season

Improve Your Golf Game with New Golf Club Grips

Bill Hanks

As the cold weather sets in, many golfers put their clubs away until the Spring. At that point, they take them out and wish that they had done some maintenance on them in the off season. This article looks at the importance of new grips on your clubs. New grips also make a great Christmas present for the avid golfer.

Reasons to replace the old grips; Grips are very important to the avid player. Grips need to fit a players hand size. Grips achieve the proper feel for weather and playing preference. They help to keep the hands from slipping on the club. Slipping grips require a stronger and more intense hand grip. This can throw your game off. A grip too small will allow you to hook the ball more.

Performance improvement; New grips can add yardage to your drives. They also help for better control over the club and your hit. They help you set up your back-swing. A grip that is too large can cause you to open up and make a slice on your drive.

When to re-grip; The signs that you need new grips are smoothness, cracks, shiny patches, torn ends of the grip, faded and bare spots and a dark residue on your golf gloves. The golf rule of thumb for re-gripping your clubs is every 60 rounds played.

How to find your grip; Go into a golf shop and get a feel for the grips, by gripping many clubs. Make sure that you have your golf glove on. There are four points to consider, when you do this. 1. hand size (s, m, l, XL) 2. firmness 3. tackiness 4. weather. All four are very important. If you have trouble finding the right grip, use a golf pro or a store manager for assistance.

Grip maintenance; Maintaining grips is very easy to do. After you play, gently scrub your grips with a towel, liquid dish detergent and warm water. You can use a hair dryer to quickly dry the moisture.

Costs; Compared to other golf items, grips are not that expensive. There are some stores that will offer free re-gripping when you buy a set of clubs from them. New grips for a friend or relative make an excellent Christmas gift.

During the off season, get your clubs ready to go for Spring.
