New Groom Hits Bride with Car

Just one day after an impromptu Las Vegas wedding, James Olwine, 33, is accused of trying to run over his new bride with his car. As one Associated Press article on the incident declared, "It wasn't the most romantic of honeymoons." (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/ honeymoon_over)

According to police reports, Olwine and his new bride, Katie Martindale, 29, have a marriage certificate indicating they were married on March 4, just a few days before the alleged incident.

Olwine and Martindale apparently were fighting in the car when police received an emergency call to report the couple. At one point, it appears Martindale exited the car and began to walk away when Olwine is accused of driving off the road to hit Martindale with the car, pushing her into a snow bank.

The incident occurred on Highland Drive, about 10 miles southeast of Salt Lake City, while the couple may have been driving home from their Las Vegas vacation and quick marriage.

According to the Salt Lake County Sheriff's office, Olwine was arrested and booked into the county jail on March 7th. Lt. Paul Jaroscak, a spokesperson for the Salt Lake County Sheriff's office indicated the both Olwine and Martindale have criminal records, and according to the Salt Lake County Sheriff's office website, Jaroscak was quoted as saying the couple was "... well known to the sheriff's office."

The charge being investigated against Olwine was reported as aggravated assault with a vehicle. At this time, it is not known if Olwine has an attorney and a court date has not yet been set.

Martindale was not reported to have been seriously injured by the assault, but Jaroscak said she may have broken her leg in the incident. It has not been reported whether the couple intends to stay married or seek annulment of divorce due to this incident.

In Las Vegas, Nevada, a man and a woman with the required marriage license fee and picture ID who are both of legal age to consent to marriage can receive a marriage license on the spot and get married immediately after purchasing the license, with no waiting period. Marriage certificates can then be mailed to the newlyweds after being processed, and all states in the United States will recognize the marriage as legal and valid.

Video of the arrest and car, which shows slight damage to the front fender and hood, is available online through Yahoo! News and the Associated Press. (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/honeymoon_over)

I don't think this is funny at all! The poor woman could have been killed. What a horrible start to their marriage.
