Unfortunately there are problems with psychiatric drugs. For example, tranquilizers and antidepressants can cause urinary obstruction in BPH (benign prostate hyperplasia). Even over-the-counter decongestants can do this. Anticholinergics can do this. BPH is seen often in older men. Women do not have a prostate. A patient with BPH must be very careful of the drugs he takes.
BPH
In this disease the prostate is enlarged. Although prostate cancer is worse, BPH can be very annoying. Urinary obstruction can be treated by surgery and by other means. Sitz baths, prostate massages, fluid restriction, avoiding caffeine, avoiding over-the-counter cold and sinus medications, excercising, and other treatments are used.
Regular ejaculation may help because it gets rid of prostate fluid.
The Heart
For heart health avoid meats high in fat such as hamburger, bacon, and sausage. Avoid hydrogenated vegetable oils, coconut and palm oils, beef fat, and lard.
In poultry much of the fat is in the skin. Remove the skin from poultry.
Frying meat, chicken, and fish adds fat. Bake, grill, or broil instead. Restrict meat.
Avoid pies, cakes, and cookies. Eat high fiber foods such as oatmeal, beans, and fruit.
Unsaturated fats are considered good. Use vegetable oils such as canola, olive, sunflower, and safflower oil. Avoid butter or lard. Avoid stick margarine. Use only soft or liquid margarine.
Lose weight if you are overweight.
Hypertension
Normal systolic pressure is from 90 to 129. High normal is from 130-139. Mildly high is from 140-159. Unfortunately you blood pressure can get higher as you get older. Exercise. Avoid eating too much salt. If you are overweight, lose weight.
Eat a diet low in salt and rich in potassium.
Potassium
Potassium is in whole grains, green, leafy vegetables, and fruits such as bananas and oranges.
General Rules
Eat fruits and vegetables. These are low in salt and in saturated fat. They have no cholesterol. This diet also lowers your risk of some cancers. Unfortunately your blood pressure might be too high to exercise safely. I do a lot of walking, which is a very mild form of exercise.
A High Potassium Diet for Hypertension
Good sources of potassium include raisins, figs, baked potatoes with skin, baked beans, low-fat yogurt, bran cereal, bananas, kiwi fruit, and orange juice. Unfortunately some drugs can make your blood pressure worse. Read labels on non-prescription items. Decongestants and diet pills should be avoided.
General Comments on Hypertension
One in 5 Americans have hypertension. More than half of Americans over age 65 have it. It would be interesting to see what the statistics are in India were many are vegetarians.
Schizophrenia
"All of our provisional ideas on psychology will some day be based on organic structure." Sigmund Freud
Since heart disease can be treated by diet, then maybe schizophrenia can also be treated by diet. My theory is that schizophrenia is an error in protein metabolism.
Sukhorukova (1969)
L. Sukhorukova of Moscow, working under professor Romasenko, studied brain biopsy material. The brain tissue was from the upper layers of the frontal cortex. This area is called the superior (upper) frontal gyrus. The electron microscope was used.
"A pronounced enlargement in the diameter of cisternae and an increase in their number in the granular endoplasmic reticulum and an accumulation of lipofuscin-like granules in the cytoplasm of neurons and glial elements were prominent on the electron photomicrographs."
The cisternae house amino acids. This work has been almost completely ignored in the US except by myself.
Conclusions
The Russian work appears to suggest an error in amino acid metabolism because the cisternae house amino acids. The lipofuscin may reflect an increased metabolic rate. Cellular garbage (lipofuscin) is being created faster than the cell can get rid of it.
If amino acids were flooding the brain cells in schizophrenia, then this data would be explained. This explanation suggests a diet very low in amino acids as a treatment. More information on psychiatry is presented in the references. More of the Russian research needs to be translated into English.
