New Horror Films to Rent for Halloween

Yvonne M. Glasgow, Ph.D.
Generally, when you have a Halloween movie marathon you tend to rent some classic flicks, like Friday the 13th or Halloween. But this Halloween why not go for some newer flicks, things that have come out in, say the last five years or so. Introduce some new "classics" to your friends while you veg out in front of the television because you are too old to trick or treat and either too young to party or just too broke! We like things that make us scream, or cringe and that is why we love to watch the blood, gore and mayhem that horror films divulge us with. Here is my list of must-see Halloween horror films.

A Nightmare On Elm Street (2010)- Finally, some smart people got together and decided to do a new take on the classic Freddy Krueger horror film. Jackie Earle Haley makes a much more frightening Freddy than Robert England did. If Freddy's burn scars look a little more realistic. Still expect to see Freddy looking for your in your nightmares!

The Lost Boys: The Tribe & The Thirst- The classic film the Lost Boys is not ruined by these new Lost Boys flicks that are more comical and ridiculous than scary. The only familiar face you will pick out in these two is Corey Feldman. Not the best, but a good watch nonetheless, just for the vampire factor.

The Crazies (2010)- This remake of the classic 1973 horror flick about a little town that becomes overrun by infected people that start becoming insane and killing other is a great choice for scaring the pants off anyone. Stars Timothy Olyphant.

The Wolfman (2010)- In an attempt to bring back the classic Universal monsters, The Wolfman succeeds at a great horror flick. The acting by Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins and Emily Blunt is nothing less than stellar. You may not want to go out to the woods at night after watching this one!

Zombie Strippers!- This comedic trip into the world of zombies stars Robert Englund and Jenna Jameson. This movie is for adults only. If you are doing a guys night movie fest this is sure to be a hit. A doctor purposely lets out a virus that turn people into flesh eating zombies, and this virus finds it's way into a strip club. I'll spare you the rest of the details lest you'd like to watch it yourself!

Zombieland- Another somewhat comedic spoof on zombies, though a bit more teenage friendly. This is one of my favorite zombie films of all time. Columbus survives the zombies by following a list of thirty rules, while one of the renegades he meets up with, Tallahassee (played by Woody Harrelson), just wants to find a Twinkie ™. Funny and gruesome flick.

Jennifer's Body- Another guys night flick, staring Amanda Seyfried, Megan Fox and Adan Brody. It's creepy, it's got possession and Megan Fox is pretty hot, even if she isn't that great of an actress. It's sure to make boys think twice about messing with cheerleaders!

    I love Zombieland!

I was impressed with the Wolfman, too. It was very much in the old, clasic horror movie style.
