According to the website, husband and wife Dana and Melanie Harvey, are the ones who originated this concept of using seatbelts to make a purse. The site has this to say on how the idea came about:
"In March 1997, while installing seatbelts into our 1950 Buick, we had the idea of making Melanie a matching handbag. Everyone loved hers so much that we decided to make more. We started making them in our one car garage in California but quickly outgrew it. We've since expanded to a 12,000 square foot design studio in Santa Ana, California where every SEATBELTBAG is lovingly Built in the USA to exact specifications."
You might be thinking, that the bags must only come in black or grey, but no, they come in a wide variety of colors, from pink to lime green. At first when you see the bags they look like a quilted purse, but they are not quilted material. They have an elegant sheen, and to be honest you can not tell they are made from seatbelts. The price for these creations start at one hundred dollars and up. The Harvey's have also have, makeup bags, and travel cases as well.
The medium tote bag is the most popular item on the site, but is it worth the $104 dollar price? This what the site says for this item:
"One of our most popular bags, the Medium Tote Zip is what every girl wants. Not too big and not too small...it's just right! This all-around great addition to your collection features a zip closure, two 24" handles that slip over your shoulder leaving a drop length of 12". Fully lined with our signature material, this bag includes a small interior pouch pocket and cell phone pocket. The keychain hook on the inside makes this bag easy to always find your keys."
The bag is also made for you, so when you place your order, it is made then, it doesn't come from a shelf and then shipped, so you know each bag is created just for you, so it takes about three weeks, to get your order. Is it worth the price, in my opinion yes, where else can you get a custom, sturdy bag for one hundred dollars.

This is a fantastic idea! Great article. Thanks for increasing awareness of this unique way to recycle. :-)
I think these are cute and a great idea, but they look kind of like Easter baskets to me. If I got one, it'd likely be for easter or for the kids. Great article, though. :-)
There are so many designer bags being toted around NYC, I fear for the Harveys that these may not catch on here. I think they're cute but they look a little bit like picnic baskets. Good article!
