New Ideas for Disposing of Your Old Christmas Tree

Christmas Trees Can Be Recycled

Clara Caldwell
When Christmas is over and it is time to dispose of the tree, many people are left wondering about the different disposal methods. Many people will decide that the best way to go is with the longstanding conventional method of disposal, the local garbage pickup service. For those choosing this method it is important to be aware of local Christmas tree removal guidelines. Tree removal is often restricted to the first two weeks after Christmas and tree size limitations may also apply. To be sure you are within the guidelines contact your local garbage service provider before Christmas begins. A variation to this disposal method would be to check with local civic organizations for removal services. Boy Scout troops sometimes offer tree removal for a small donation. The donation can be tax deductible making this option attractive at the end of the year.

There are several other ways to recycle a Christmas tree. Creativity and imagination is all that is needed. A favorite disposal method of many is to make a fish feeding habitat with old trees. This can be done in ponds or lakes where fish live. Christmas trees are gently lowered into the water where they become a natural habitat for fish to feed and hide in. Using the family pond or lake lot to sink Christmas trees in can be a learning experience for the entire family throughout the year. A variation to this project can be to build a bird habitat. A bird tree can be made by securing the Christmas tree in an upright position and placing bird houses or seeded pine cones on the branches to attract winter birds.

Walking trails are prevalent throughout most of the country. This is another exciting area where Christmas trees can be recycled. Christmas trees can be stripped of limbs and used to line the edges of trails. Families can use this as a team building exercise. Old Christmas trees can be picked up from family and neighbors homes and recycled for path edges. Variations to this project could be to make a wildflower garden edger or a vegetable garden edger.

With a little creativity and Imagination your old Christmas tree can have a whole new meaning by January. Enlist the help of your children and make a family project of recycling your family Christmas tree. Memories will be made in the process.
