While the third in The Chronicles of Narnia franchise, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader was created with a staggering budget of $USD155 million, it only managed to collect an income of $USD104 million in the domestic box office. Offsetting its disappointing opening in American and Canadian theaters, the movie made up for its performance in France, Russia, the UK and Japan. In Japan alone, the sequel raised a box office income of $USD1.4 million.

In spite of earning substantially less than its predecessors, The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe ($291.7 million) and Prince Caspian ($141.6 million), producer Walden Media is committed to producing a new investment movie to add to the Narnia series. Next in line will be the movie interpretation of C.S. Lewis's sixth book, The Magician's Nephew.

Michael Flaherty, in an interview with "The Christian Post," confirmed the making of the new investment movie: "We are starting to talk to (20th Century Fox) and the C.S. Lewis estate now about The Magician's Nephew being our next film. If we can all agree to move forward, then what we would do is find someone to write the script. So, it could still be a couple of years."

The movie producers are banking on the fact that Lewis's sixth book, a prequel to The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe , will be more popular than The Dawn Treader .

Narnia 's latest released investment movie was able to rake in a total earning of $300 million outside its' US box office receipts. Internationally, it has outdone the success of Prince Caspian , which was able to earn $278 million in 2008. The first Narnia movie still remains the top earner in the franchise with an income of $453.3 million in 2005.

The Dawn Treader is also expected to bring in more revenue from DVD distribution. The DVD is slated for release on April 8 this year.

When The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe debuted nationwide in the US it immediately became the number 1 box office movie, grossing in total over $USD141 million in total revenue in just the United States and over $278 million throughout the rest of the world with a majority of the concentration of revenue coming from Europe. When released on Blu-Ray and DVD, it was also an instant hit and quickly became the top selling DVD the week it was released in the United States making an easy $54.7 million. By the end of its first year of sales, the movie had grossed approximately $71 million in DVD sales, becoming one of the highest grossing home release movies.

Producers Walden Media spent nearly $225 million on the initial movie's creation and Disney added $175 million to the pot to spend on promotion and marketing. Marketing items have included a chain of figurines and dress up costumes. A series of collectible statues were produced. A Monopoly edition of The Chronicles of Narnia and a Disney Hollywood Studio attraction were also created and have added to the brand's revenue stream.
