What is the New iPhone Firmware?
IPhone and iPod Touch users have been waiting for their newest upgrade to their iPhone and iPod Touch firmware, numbered 3.0, for months now. At last the awaited moment lies just around the corner, and apple fans will have reason to rejoice. With the new iPhone firmware 3.0 upgrade comes a host of exciting features, and answers to all of the questions that users have been asking since the beginning.
No, the new iPhone firmware 3.0 will not explain the meaning of life, show the actual size of the multiverse, or build a better mousetrap. It will however fix a lot of the holes that customers have felt were lacking.
Here is a list of features that have been unveiled to be included in the new iPhone firmware 3.0:
New iPhone Firmware Features
In app commerce for all apps on the new iPhone firmware - Because we all need another way to spend money at the iTunes App Store, Apple has made it even easier for its customers to shell out dollar after dollar on the fun and exciting games and apps on their platform. Application developers are excited about this feature on the new iPhone firmware because it means that now individual apps can give the option for customers to purchase upgrades, expansions, tools, etc. right from inside the apps themselves.
Peer-to-peer connectivity - Previously, iPhone and iPod Touch users have been able to connect to each other through a local wireless network that both devices were connected to in order to share data and play games. The new iPhone firmware 3.0 upgrade makes this process easier by allowing the devices to connect to each other directly, allowing for much more efficient and reliable relations between devices.
Accessories galore - The new iPhone firmware 3.0 makes room for peripherals and accessories to install to the device. Some of the most significant advancements that this addition allows for include accessories to check blood pressure and blood sugar levels, external keyboards, and more.
Push notification - One of the biggest questions that was asked when the iTunes App Store really began to develop a mind of its own involved the running of applications in the background and manipulation of the push notification service. With all of the great things that the iPhone could purportedly do (including butter your bread and heal the sick), why were the apps unable to run a more continual role.
The new iPhone firmware 3.0 resolves this issue with a compromise fix. While the new push notification service will operate well and give users of the new iPhone firmware more of what they want, it is still not a true push system. According to Apple, using such a system would decimate battery life and lock up the iPhone's resources. For those die-hard push fans, it looks like you'll just have to wait a little longer.
Landscape...everywhere - Anyone with bigger fingers (and even many with smaller fingers) has at one point or another cursed the iPhone's tiny portrait-oriented keyboard when sending text messages, email, and the like. The new iPhone firmware 3.0 presents us with a new option: landscape...everywhere. At last the larger, more accommodating landscape keyboard can be used across the board in applications, mail, even text. Now if only I could copy and paste!
Cut, copy, and paste is in the new iPhone firmware - Oh wait...I CAN copy and paste! The collective voice of the hoi polloi has been heard, and Apple has finally implemented a cut, copy, and paste system across the entirety of the system. With the new iPhone firmware 3.0, iPhone users will be able to take text from the web and paste it into a text, or from an e-book and paste it into an email. The new iPhone firmware's innovative system for copy and paste makes all of this as easy as double-clicking.
Message forwarding - Along with cut, copy, and paste the new iPhone firmware 3.0 adds in a feature that is common among other phones: message forwarding. Until this point, users had to manually retype any text that they wished to forward to a friend. No more, as the new firmware makes all of this as easy as huckleberry pie.
Spotlight - The Apple iPhone sometimes functions more like a computer than a phone. Sometimes an iPhone user will use her phone even more than her computer as a platform. With all of the information that it processes on a given day, information can become cumbersome to obtain. The new iPhone firmware implements a version of the standard Apple Spotlight ("Find" for you Windows users) to help you find whatever you are looking for, whether it be a text, phone number, address, etc.
Multimedia messaging finally debuts in the new iPhone firmware - Another feature mysteriously absent from Apple's original release of their wonderphone was the ability to send MMS, or multimedia messages. While the feature is standard on most phones these days Apple chose to leave it out, presumably due to the various other ways for a person to send pictures via the platform. At last Apple has capitulated with the new iPhone firmware, and MMS will become a standard for sending pictures between phones once again.
There are a host of other features to come with the new iPhone firmware 3.0 upgrade, including voice memos and extra pages for apps. This upgrade is a significant one, giving users what amounts to an entirely new phone.
Current users will have instant access to the new iPhone firmware upgrade for free, which is really a fantastic deal for the kind of features that they will now have access to. IPod Touch users will have to fork over $10 to have access to these features, but that seems a small price to pay for the next version of their device.
Look for the new iPhone firmware 3.0 upgrade to hit iTunes in early summer.
