New Jersey Signs Civil Union Bill

Traci Brown
Beginning Febuary 19, same sex couples in New Jersey wishing to enter Civil Unions will be allowed to do so. A legislation in October said that gay couples should be allowed the same rights as married couples, but were unsure of what to call it. Today, it was decided upon to be called Civil Unions. This offers couples who register many of the same rights as heterosexual couples, including health insurance benefits. However, it still does not offter the same benefits of married couples, as stated under federal law. No one is sure how many same sex couples will take advantage of the new law when it comes into affect.

One step forward, or one step backward? It's up to you to decide. Hopefully, this law will be placed into affect and will not be revoked like some states have decided to do.
