New List of Seized Torrent Sites and Possible Connection to Wikileaks Scandal
Does the Wikileaks.Org Cabe Leak Have Any Bearing on the Massive Crackdown on File Sharing Sites?
As I reported previously, certain sites were not breaking any laws as they didn't host any torrent files and simply acted as portals to other websites that did host torrents.
In any case, The Department of Homeland Security has now seized 88 domains from ICANN for various infringements of copyright. That statement means that sites that have registered company names within their domain name are considered to be infringing on copyright and are then seized.
Now I'm not here to defend illegal activity but it seems that this particular action by the Government is draconian and over zealous.
It also strikes me as odd that The Department of Homeland Security is the entity that was charged with seizing these websites. The DHS is the collective body of the United States Government's intelligence gathering network. This network includes the CIA and FBI and several other 3 letter agencies.
The timing of the seizing of so many torrent sites, I'd like to also mention that there are legitimate uses for torrents, are being taken down and confiscated which coincides with the Wikileaks.org Cable Gate leak and the subsequent DDOS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack by a very powerful computer network.
As we all know, torrent sites are a means of spreading information and had Wikileaks been knocked off-line by a certain, very large, entity then their backup plan may have been to distribute this information via Torrent sites.
There is a flaw in all of this as the USA only has jurisdiction over American based torrent sites and some of the most popular sites of this nature are owned and operated outside of the United States.
Is all the domain seizing and DDOS attacking against Wikileaks a concerted effort by the US Government? Throw into the picture the recent Interpol arrest warrant for the founder of Wikileaks.org and you've got the makings of a very large conspiracy theory.
In any case, I'm not going to delve any further into conspiracies at the moment. I would like to inform my readers of the most recent list of websites that have been seized.
It is being reported that the latest total of sites seized is 88 but the most recent list that I could find only lists 82 torrent and other miscellaneous domains. So, having said that I am posting the latest list of seized sites (that I was able to find) below.

This list was released to the public on November 29, 2010 by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement which is part of The Department of Homeland Security.
I would imagine that things are going to get crazier and many more sites will end up being seized by the US Government. It's impossible to tell exactly to what end at this time.

Post a CommentYeah, I haven't decided where I stand in regards to the DDoS attacks but I wouldn't put it passed the Government. Whether there is or isn't a connection between the DDOS attacks on Wikileaks and the sudden and dramatic crackdown on US based Torrent sites? I would call it coincidence if not for the fact that the Department of Homeland Security is now suddenly mixed up with taking down Torrent sites. That just makes absolutely no sense to me unless they fear a threat from torrent sites all the sudden? Something just isn't passing the smell test for me.
I'm with Jon Steward on the WikiLeaks.... So, nu?!
