New Music for the Summer

David Carr
Duffy - Rockferry

Critics have already tried to compare Duffy to Amy Winehouse (without the drugs and drama) but that comparison misses the mark. Duffy puts together a classic set of British retro soul, 60's pop and glorious r&b. Her lyrics are filled with angst, so much so you might shed a tear while she croons the tunes "Serious", "Mercy" and the title track. Give this disc a spin and make sure to meet Duffy down on "Warwick Avenue".

UH HUH HER - Common Reaction

Don't let the ambiguous name fool you, there is nothing vague about the music of Uh Huh Her. This new indie pop band is lead by the dynamic duo of Camila Grey and Leisha Hailey. On their debut disc "Common Reaction" Grey and Hailey mix and match vocal melodies and harmonies while the band lays down a steady stream of ethereal guitars, 80's styled synth pop and a dizzying array of programmed beats. When "Common Reaction" drops in August be sure to add it to your collection.

Al Green - Lay It Down

The number one soul preacher is back with an old school meets new school sound. The legendary Al Green is back with "Lay It Down", a disc that boasts his old school R&B sensibilities with a new school feel and attitude. Green enlists the help of new school talent such as Corinne Bailey Rae, John Legend and Anthony Hamilton. Green brings his vintage style to the table with an updated feel thanks to producer/Roots drummer Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson. It has been a while since R&B has sounded so fresh and alive.

The Feelings Mutual - The Feelings Mutual

If you are looking for a band to bring back the true meaning of heavy rock with just a small dose of indie rock then you will want to hear the 5-song ep by The Feelings Mutual. This power rock trio picks up brilliantly where Queens of the Stone Age with five tunes filled with an explosive rock sound. The band lays down an intense wall of sound on "Ring Me Out, "Sleep" and "Black Cloud" and the trio fills the space whit a mix of heady guitar and thundering bass and drums. Make no mistake this is not a pop-punk/emo group. The Feelings Mutual is ready to bring the fire and passion back to heavy rock and their latest ep is just the beginning.

Timmy Curran - Word of Mouth

Timmy Curran is another action sports athlete turned singer/songwriter. Curran puts together eleven heartfelt songs and comes off like an old school troubadour on his debut disc. Curran's music has a dream like quality combined with personal lyrics centering on the triumphs and tragedies of life. Curran combines the innocence of Matt Costa and the musical maturity of a young Paul Simon. Timmy Curran made a name for himself in the world of surfing and thanks to "Word of Mouth" his name will indeed make waves in the alternative music world.
