New National Educational Standards for Math and English

Tough Math and English Instruction to Be Standardized Nationally

A milestone on national educational requirements for English and Mathematics has been reached by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers as reported by the Associated Press. A first step in recruiting of students to fill jobs in these disciplines in the future by requiring students in K-12 to be on the same learning curve across the country.

Students who move have trouble because of the different standards in each states (in some cases within the same state) will benefit from standardization of textbooks and national testing. It will require that students in each grade will have common goals on concepts and advanced computations.

President Obama has also urged the government to engage the Title I program receipts in order to bring about an orderly progression towards raising standards for college bound and work readiness in high school students a priority.

The standards will be raised in most states to bring them in sync with the top educational states in the union. This will he help students who move from state to state. Also college students who go to out-of-state institutions will benefit as well.

This effort is supported by 48 of the 50 states (Alaska and Texas will not participate) and will be required for any state that receives Title I funds from the federal government. These standards have been sorely needed for a long time as students knowledge of English and Mathematics has slowly deteriorated over the years. In some areas these standards change every year or two because of changing curriculum by school districts.

A report by a nonprofit in Orange County California confirms Middle Schools that expect high standards of all students and impose a rigorous curriculum of study backed by superintendent and principal evaluation have the best change of success in their education. This is just one of many that show students will raise their grades based on the difficulties of the requirements.

We should all embrace these kinds of changes in our school systems. They would be helpful and beneficial in making every student more employable on a national level. Further benefits would be achieved by encouraging industry to hire highly educated Americans instead of placing jobs overseas were students are raising the bar on their education in order to bring more work to their country.

Education has always been the answer to our unemployment, crime and poverty issues. Somewhere we have lost or way and now the federal government has drawn a map to help us find our productive way back. This is but the first step for America to retain global leadership in the future.
