New Oregon Law Over Honest Pint of Beer

Oregonians Bitter Over How Much Beer is (or Isn't) in a Pint of Beer

Beer. The sign said "Free Beer!" Nine hundred and ninety-nine bottles of... (feel free to sing along) Yes, you guessed it: BEER.

"He was a wise man who invented beer."
Plato

The sign said "Free Beer!" is a joke usually followed by the phrase "Now that I have your attention..." So now that I have your attention let's talk about... BEER.

One of the first things I learned when I moved to the Pacific Northwest is there are are two things we take very seriously: Coffee and beer. If you've read this far, you know this article isn't about coffee.

Portland, Oregon, is considered the microbrew mecca of the world. Eugene hosts an annual Microbrew Festival that attracts competitors from England and Germany as well as dozens of local microbreweries. (Next year's festival is February 12 & 13, 2010 -make your reservations now.) There probably isn't a town in the state that doesn't have more than one local brewpub. Beer samplers are common sight on the menu.

I shouldn't be surprised that the Oregon legislature needs a new law to make sure beer guzzlers were getting every hops-drop of the brew they paid for. Oh yeah, Oregon Senate just passed a HONEST PINT bill. A pint is 16 oz and too many bars are getting away with filling the glass to a 13 oz -or horrors - using a sneaky bar glass made deliberately thicker. These heavier glasses allow them to serve a patron more glass and less beer.

Bars that serve an honest pint say they deserve credit for doing so and patrons have indicated that a list of honest pint bars vs. not-so-honest ones would influence their choice of drinking venues.

The bill now goes on to the House. Opponents of the bill can only pray that Oregon's Representatives are all wine snobs.

Beer was said to be invented to pacify the goddess Sehkmet whose sense of Justice had gotten too severe. Before beer mellowed her, the streets ran with blood of sinners.
