New Orleans Saints Play Softball for Charity

(NEW ORLEANS, LA) - The New Orleans Saints went to bat for charity in the second annual Heath Evans Foundation Showdown in Metairie, LA on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at Zepher Field. The Heath Evans Foundation benefits children who have been sexually abused in childhood.

The New Orleans Saints divided up by placing the offense against the defense in front of almost 9,000 fans to raise money for this important cause. The offense hammered the defense and won the game by a score of 25-13.

Highlights of the softball game came from Chase Daniel, backup quarterback for the Saints, who hit a home run, bringing in two others and bringing the score up to 21-6. Mark Ingram, a first-round draft pick of the Saints hit a homer on his first trip to bat. Ingram's homer made Reggie Bush's trip to bat striking out a bit of an embarrassment. However, Bush made up for the strike-out by getting a fan wearing a number 25 jersey in the crowd to bat for him. The "Bush fan" delivered with a home run sending the ball over the wall at left field.

A good time was had by all and gave the players a chance to forget about the NFL lockout for a couple of hours. With the new season quickly approaching it is looking more like a delay in the season opening may become a reality, which means a shorter season and players receiving less checks, which are distributed during the season.

The Heath Evans Foundation was started by Heath Evans and his wife, Beth. Evans Evans is a fullback on the New Orleans Saints football team. The Heath Evans Foundation currently provides help to children and young people in the Greater New Orleans area and Palm Beach, Florida.

According to the Heath Evans Foundation website the mission of the foundation, " is dedicated to fostering hope and healing in the lives of children and families affected by sexual abuse. We are committed to breaking the cycle of abuse through healing the psychological, physical, and spiritual wounds inflicted on innocent children to bring hope and healing to the young victims of sexual abuse."
