The highly anticipated third and fourth sequels to the Spanish zombie/possession movie "[REC]" are both being worked on presently. The third film in the series, "[REC] 3 Genesis," is currently in post-production. Director Jaume Balaguer³ has started pre-production on the final chapter entitled "[REC] 4 Apocalypse."
The two films are supposed to wrap up the "[REC]" storyline that Jaume Balaguer³ and Paco Plaza co-wrote and co-directed together. The first two films were successes with both critics and moviegoers alike. The original stirred up so much interest that it was remade virtually shot-for-shot in the United States and distributed through Screen Gems into theaters with the title "Quarantine." The American version then spawned a follow-up that veered from the path of the original Spanish sequel.
The story of "[REC] 3 Genesis" transports us "miles away from the original location and partly in broad daylight giving the film an entirely fresh yet disturbing new reality. It encompasses the events of the first two films and after the sense of claustrophobia previously experiences. The infection has left the building. In a clever twist that draws together the plots of the first two movies this third part of the saga also works as a decoder to uncover information hidden in the first two films and leaves the door open for the final installment."
"[REC] 4 Apocalypse" has "the pandemic spreading to unknown proportions." It will be the final installment of the series. The script for the movie has been finished, much to Balaguer³'s excitement.
"Launched the screenplay of '[REC] Apocalypse.' Blood will run, I fear. First track '[REC 4]:' Lots of red, of course, but also blue. # forgiveness?" The director posted on his Twitter. I can't understand half of what he typed, but I translated it as, "I'm happy with the script! It's going to be bloody and good!"
The thing that attracts me to the "[REC]" series is the turn it took when it was revealed the "pandemic" was not the typical zombie plague but demonic possession. That little twist is what did it for me and probably many others. It will be interesting to see how everything pans out in the end. It sounds like audiences are in for some surprises.
"[REC] 3 Genesis" and "[REC] 4 Apocalypse" are both set to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival next year. Filmax Entertainment will be releasing the films. There is no word on any distribution in the U.S. as of right now.
