Scribblenaughts and More

Grant Bracken
On the big consuls September might be all about rocking out with either of the new versions of Rock Band or Guitar Hero but that does not mean you should forget your little friend, the Nintendo DS. Plenty of cool games are coming out for the little handheld system in September and none of them involve guitars. In fact one of the most anticipated games of the year, Scribblenauts, is coming out in the first month of Fall. This is a guide to all the games of note coming out on the Nintendo DS in the month of September.

September 1st: 8-Ball Allstars

This is not just a simple game of pool. This game is a very modern take on the game of billiards. It allows for online game play and a great deal of customization so you can play the game the way you would like to. If you enjoy pool this will be a fun little game to pick up.

September 1st: The Hardy Boys: Treasure on the Tracks

This is a mystery solving game starring the Hardy Boys (who knew those kids were still around solving mysteries). The main game takes place on the Royal Express as it travels from Paris to Russia. The boys must explore the train and historical cities on the way looking for treasure.

September 1st: Mini Ninja

This action adventure game starring the small little ninja known as Hiro is also coming out on the DS. This game offers all the same adventure you can find on the consol versions not to mention new 2D puzzle elements included only in the DS version of the martial arts romp.

September 8th; Dirt 2 (www.dirt2game.com)

All the fun of the off road adventure that is being released on all the big systems, but in a convenient hand held size. This game expands of the success of the first off road racing game to offer new ways to race and new locations to get dirty in.

September 8th: Imagine: Detective

This release is another mystery game that tends to flesh out pretty well on the DS. This time around you are a teenage detective that is trying to rid your school of bullies and your town of various bad guys. You do this by finding clues and completing a series of mini games that all rely on your keen sense of observation. It's a pretty game that would be perfect for younger players.

September 8th: Obscure: The Aftermath (www.obscureaftermath.com)

The chiller is the sequel to horror game and takes place two years later. Players can choose from six characters all with different abilities as they try to survive alone or with a friend from the creatures that go bump in the night. This is not a game for the younger set.

September 14th: Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story

An evil wizard tricks one of video's games most classic bad guys, Bowser, into eating a poison mushroom that causes him to swallow everything is site including Mario and Luigi. Players get to enjoy two storylines in the newest Mario RPG. You play as the classic duo inside Bowser trying there best to find a way out of the big guy. Then you also play Bowser himself who is trying to save his castle from a sinister invader. Play can switch between the two stories at will and both aspects of the game will involve precise times button pushing to pull of the classic moves.

September 15th Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 (marvelultimatealliance.marvel.com)

The next installment of the Marvel action adventure title is also coming out on the Nintendo DS. Not much is getting said about the handheld editions of this game but the storyline will at least remain the same. I imagine the graphics will not be as grand and you might have a few less heroes to fight as with the DS version but if you must get your Marvel fix in and don't have a big system, you will not be left in the cold.

September 15th IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey

This flight battle simulation series use to be exclusive to the PC but with this newest chapter its getting release on most of the major systems. For the DS version the graphics may not be the greatest but the control will be unique, as the bottom screen will be used for the flight deck, so you can control your dogfights by touch.

September 15th Scribblenauts (games.kidswb.com/scribblenauts/)

"Anything you can write you can use!" that's the main tag line for this highly anticipated release coming out in the middle of the month. As the hero Maxwell you can draw things on the screen and they come to life to help you through various adventures. The design is simple yet addictive. The sheer amount of things you can draw is amazing. The visuals are bright and fresh. It's everything that Nintendo does best. Do not miss this game for if you do you will regret it.

September 22nd My Hero Astronaut, Doctor and Firefighter

All three of these games come out at on the same day. They are all designed to use the unique controls of the DS to mimic the real life jobs of people that do some amazing stuff. They are all fairly cheap games meant for a younger audience but look to be decent games. Astronaut seems to have the most depth where as Doctor seems a little shallow and too much like other medical games on the DS.

September 22nd Nostalgia

This RPG is the start of a new series and can only be found on the DS. It takes place in 19th century England as Eddy, the son of an adventurer travels the world with a group of friends looking for adventure. The airship in the game is not only your mode of travel but is also used in combat during various points in the game. The visuals for this game are very pretty.

September 22nd Spore Hero Arena (www.spore.com/what/heroarena)

Building off the popularity of both the Spore PC game and the Spore Creatures game for the DS comes this new game. In Arena you get to build your creatures from the ground up like in other Spore games but now you get to have them battle other spore creatures in arena style combat. The different parts that make up the critters now not only add abilities but also change the creatures fighting style. For fans of Spore this will be worth picking up.

September 29th Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days

Most RPG fans are waiting for Kingdom Hearts 3 with baited breath. It appears they are going to have to keep waiting but to ease the pain there is a new Kingdom Hearts game our for Nintendo DS. This game is a prequel of sorts focusing on Roxas from the main series and his beginnings with Organization 13. It will fill in some of the blanks between Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 and also allow multiplayer co-op play for the first time in the series.
