New Research to Help in Combating HIV

After years searching for a way to even combat HIV, scientists may have finally found a way to counter-effect the virus, creating a healthy life for those affected by it.

The University of Miami studied and recognized a lower amount of mutated HIV cells in patients who took the pills for nine months. There have been numberous times that selenium deficiencies were found in HIV patients suggesting that it reacts in improving the immune system, especially in diminishing the HIV virus.

This may help out lower class individuals with HIV, as it could be a cheap and easy way for the virus to be kept stable. Over the years there have been advancements that have kept increasing the expectancy of life for HIV patients, and this could be the start of a big breakthrough in defeating this massive killer.

Therapy for HIV is required in a very strict way to keep the virus in check, and there are a risk of side effects, this could still be the answer that many suffering people have been hoping for, for years. Selenium helps improve the immunity of cells, decreasing the risk of more cells being mutated by the spreading virus, and in turn reversing the effects to help the patient out.

91 HIV patients were tested for 9 months with a daily capsule of 200 micrograms of high-selenium yeast. In the same amount of time, 83 more patients took a placebo. After nine months levels were greater in those with the selenium pills, proving that it was not just a placebo effect.

The higher the selenium, the lower the count of mutated HIV cells in people taking the pills and yet an increase in the cells that help fight off the infection. Scientists are still not certain why selenium reacts the way it does in boosting immunity and fighting off infection, but I'm sure many HIV positive people will be happy as long as it helps.

Although technically selenium should not be used in infected people without consulting their doctor first, just like every other pill, it's sure to be a positive outlook for most.
