New Roller Coasters: Prowler Stalks Worlds of Fun Amusement Park

This Beast of a Wooden Roller Coaster is Not for the Faint of Heart

Julia Williams
There's a Prowler on the loose in Kansas City, Missouri. Skulking deep in the woods at Worlds of Fun Amusement Park, the Prowler waits to prey on unsuspecting guests. Can those who dare to ride this beastly new wooden roller coaster emerge unscathed? Or will the Prowler prevail?

Worlds of Fun Amusement Park is scheduled to unleash its new Prowler wooden roller coaster in late April. Custom designed and built for the park's topography by the acclaimed Great Coasters International Inc. (GCI) of Sunbury, Pennsylvania, the Prowler is nestled deep within heavily wooded terrain. The two-and-a-half minute ride begins with a heart-pounding, scream inducing 85-foot plummet into a ravine.

After the spiral plunge, the wooden roller coaster races through the trees, ripping through a series of bunny hills and sharply banked turns that deftly hug the landscape. With riders firmly grasped in its clutches, the powerful Prowler carves a terrifying path through the woods until the terrain-twisting, high-speed chase comes to a breathless finish.

Prowler is the seventh roller coaster at Worlds of Fun Amusement Park. Located in the Africa section of the park, this new wooden roller coaster reaches speeds up to 51 MPH and creates a total elevation change of 102 feet throughout the course of the 3,074 foot thrill ride.

Prowler features two custom 24-passenger GCI Millennium Flyer trains. Train One of this new wooden roller coaster is metallic green and metallic blue with black trim and seating. Train Two is metallic copper and metallic blue with black trim and seating. Prowler can accommodate approximately 850 riders per hour.

If you can't wait to experience this new wooden roller coaster, you can take one of three virtual rides at the Worlds of Fun website. The front-seat POV ride (complete with screams and real sound effects) is the next best thing to being there. You can also email your friends four different Prowler virtual postcards, download desktop wallpaper, read the official Prowler blog and view detailed ride statistics. You can even view 374 photos of the roller coaster in all stages of construction.

By all accounts, Prowler looks to be an exciting addition to the roller coaster offerings of Worlds of Fun. One of my top ten wooden roller coasters is their Timber Wolf, built in 1989. Apparently I'm not the only one who loves this roller coaster. According to the Worlds of Fun website, Timber Wolf is consistently rated high by amusement park fans.

Worlds of Fun is also home to a Bollinger & Mabillard (B & M) inverted roller coaster called the Patriot, which opened in 2006 and is aptly painted red, white and blue. The park's 205' tall Mamba steel roller coaster, at 5600' long, is one of the longest coasters in the U.S.

Ride Prowler if you dare. I'll see you there!
