A press release Monday announced the formation of a new Jewish school in Beverly Hills that will service Beverly Hills, Beverlywood, Westwood, West LA, and Century City.

The school, called Ohr Letzion, will be led by Rabbi David Toledano, a respected religious leader in the area. Classes will mainly be taught in Hebrew to "promote a deeper understanding of the teachings of the Jewish texts and practices," by well-trained teachers and rabbis according to the press release.

The classes are almost already filled, with the school launching with three pre-school classes for 2- to 4-year olds.

Rabbi Toledano described the school: "The school represents a lifelong dream that has become a reality as a result of the incredible efforts of our highly dedicated staff and the outpouring of support from the community. I am elated with the overwhelming response from our parents and faculty to join me in creating a positive, compassionate learning environment for our children, while using the latest advanced educational techniques in a focused curriculum of teaching the fundamentals."

Leat Silvera will be the early childhood director of the school. Silvera, a mother of four, says she is practicing her teaching with a modern approach, saying, "We are utilizing home schooling techniques in focusing on the individual students' learning strengths and skills and what they respond best to. Our goal is to inspire and model a passion for learning while building a positive character and enthusiasm for life."

Ohr Letzion has seen positive support from various leaders in the community, including Ehud Danoch, Israel's senior representative in Los Angeles and Consul General of Israel. Danoch calls Rabbi Toledano "one of the most sought after spiritual leaders in Los Angeles."

Also supporting the creation of the school is Los Angeles City Councilman Jack Weiss, who said, "I am grateful to Rabbi Toledano for his leadership, service and vision in the community, and I am proud to welcome the Ohr Letzion school to my district. This new educational institution will be a wonderful addition to Los Angeles' thriving Jewish community." Los Angeles Wizo President Miriam Wizman, New York Jewish community leader Jack Avital, and Beverly Hills Mayor Jimmy Delshad also spoke out in support of the school.

The school is located at 9717 West Pico Blvd., the center of the Jewish community in Beverly Hills, and will be opening August 29, 2007. According to an NPR article, roughly 20% of Beverly Hills' population is Iranian, the majority of whom practice Judaism, making Beverly Hills the perfect place for Ohr Letzion.

If the school is in Councilman Weiss's district in Los Angeles, as stated in the article, it can't actually be in Beverly Hills at the same time. It's what we call in L. A., "Beverly Hills Adjacent." The Four Seasons Hotel, on the border of the two cities, calls itself "at" Beverly Hills, to add the name cache. Not that there's anything wrong or downmarket about the Westside of L. A. that Weiss represents; it's similar to the East Side of NYC.
