New Sex and the City 2 Trailer Hints at Carrie Affair with Aiden

When Tiger Woods, David Letterman and Jesse James had extra-marital affairs they were called creeps, scoundrels and worse. Tiger Woods and Jesse James even had to go to sexual rehab as penance for their sins. When Julia Roberts broke up her current husband's marriage and even taunted his wife by wearing a t-shirt that said "A Low Vera," she remained America's sweetheart. Even Meryl Streep's fictional affair with Clint Eastwood in "Bridges of Madison County" was called romantic by many fans.

When it comes to extra-marital affairs in Hollywood, the Scarlet A is no longer a badge of shame for women. In fact, the letter A now seems to stand for "A-OK."

So when the new trailer of 'Sex and the City 2' was released last week (see Sex and the City 2 trailer here), broadly hinting at an affair between Carrie Bradshaw (played by Sarah Jessica Parker) and her ex-flame Aiden Shaw (played by John Corbett), fans had a field day guessing whether Carrie would cheat on her relatively new husband Big (played by Christopher Noth), to whom she has been married for only two years (although, like dog years, in Hollywood time that equals 14 years of marital tedium).

In the TV version of "Sex and the City," Carrie cheated on perfect boyfriend Aiden with "bad boy" Big, a mysterious man who playfully toyed with Carrie as if she were his personal Duncan Yo-Yo. Female fans loved taking sides in the Aiden vs. Big competition. Some thought Carrie was foolish to jeopardize her relationship with a caring guy like Aiden by fooling around with a cad like Big; others cheered Carrie's fling because her insecurity around Big was more thrilling and romantic.

When Aiden broke up with Carrie at Charlotte's wedding (see clip here) he looked like a bewildered dog whose bone had just been snatched away from him by his beloved master, a poignant and memorable scene that makes it difficult to picture Aiden now reverting to the Big role in the upcoming "Sex and the City 2." Aiden knows first hand the acute pain of betrayal and does not seem the type to want to inflict such misery on others. Carrie, on the other hand, would find an affair with Aiden thrilling since Aiden is now the forbidden fruit and the once mysterious Big has become the familiar guy whose dirty socks she washes (figuratively, of course; the posh Bigs no doubt send their laundry out).

Because an affair between Carrie and Aiden in "Sex and the City 2" is so blatantly teased in the new "Sex and the City 2" trailer, it is only remotely likely the two will actually consummate their relationship in Abu Dhabi, the cosmopolitan capital of the United Arab Emirates, where the two New Yorkers just happen to bump into each other. Whether Carrie and Aiden have an affair or not, you can bet that female fans will not judge Carrie as harshly as they would if her name were Larry. Our modern American double standard finds female affairs romantic, airbrushing out the stigma faced by men who do the same.
