New Skittles Candy Chocolate Mix: Impulse Buy Gone Bad

Donna Noble
We all have done it. We stand in line at the store with our purchases in-hand, ready to head home when we look over and see those impulse items that line the checkout lanes at every store in America. Sometimes we avoid making an impulse buy, but other times we just can't resist. Such was my case on a recent visit to Wal-Mart. Along with my favorite magazine, I picked up a package of Skittles Candies New Chocolate Mix and decided that for 55 cents I could handle the contents of the package.

When I think of Skittles I automatically think of the bright red packaging and the wonderful fruity smell you get upon opening the package. My immediate thought upon looking at the brown packaging was how boring and drab the package looked but the rainbow going through the middle of the wrapping gave me hope. When I opened the package and took a sniff of the contents I could tell these were not going to be anything at all like the original. The scent of chocolate was very strong and had me wondering about the taste.

I am a huge fan of regular skittles. The chewy texture is part of the wonderful fruit flavor of original skittles. However if I were to imagine eating a chewy coffee bean I would compare that flavor and texture to what I found inside the package for New Chocolate Mix Skittles. While there are five flavors in the package my first reaction on trying each was that they tasted the same. I could tell no difference between the five flavors at all. Each had the same chocolate taste. As I examined the five flavors of S'mores (tan), Vanilla (cream), Chocolate Caramel (light brown), Chocolate Pudding (medium brown), and Brownie Batter (dark brown) more carefully I found myself still thinking that the Chocolate Pudding, Chocolate Caramel, and Brownie Batter tasted exactly the same. The S'mores and Vanilla were slightly different in taste but the same chocolate undertones still existed in them. Out of all five flavors the Vanilla was the worst because of the sweetness and the S'mores was the best. I could even taste a hint of grahm cracker in the S'mores, of course this made me want a campfire and real S'mores.

While I was not overly impressed with the New Chocolate Mix Skittles I can see where chocolate lovers might find this product appealing. I myself will be sticking to the original skittles in the bright red packaging. I would much rather "taste the rainbow" than eat chewy coffee beans.

Oh well, It's very normal, not many things like the chocolate mix, won't succeed as well as the original flavor, since It's all new to the company.

That's too bad that they turned out to be disappointing! At least you know which one you prefer!
