New Song Ideas for Halloween Party Playlists

J Ronson
Halloween music doesn't have to just be The Monster Mash and the Theme from the Addams Family. Plenty of contemporary musicians are using horror as a form of expression, and the result is the perfect soundtrack for Halloween. Here are a few artists you should consider including in your Halloween playlist.

Creature Feature

Creature Feature is an emerging independent band from California. There songs are directly influenced by the horror genre, but also offer accessibility through familiar music techniques. The music is mostly made of guitar and synthesizer, with macabre lyrics and danceable beats. A Gorey Demise is perhaps the most appropriate track for a Halloween soundtrack, comically detailing an alphabetical list of deaths over the past year at a party. The songs will provide a perfectly moody party atmosphere for Halloween night.

Voltaire

Voltaire is the self-proclaimed Goth Guru. His music is European folk-style, leading an element of class and unfamiliarity to his songs. With themes of vampirism, death, and destruction, Voltaire's eerily calming melodies and wry humor is a perfect match for a more sophisticated Halloween party. For the fan of the goofy and danceable, look no further than his song Brains, featured on the hit Cartoon Network series Billy and Mandy.

The Horrorpops

The Horrorpops perform in a quasi-rockabilly style that's always great to get a party started. There themes are taken straight out of horror films, and always feature catchy melodies and fun beats. Their big stand-out track is the funny Walk Like a Zombie, about how love can overcome all odds - even the undead. Their sound does tilt towards rock, but it's still great Halloween music.

Regina Spector

Regina Spector may be the most well known, and the most unusual, choice for this list. She did release one album that is a perfect match for Halloween: Mary Ann Meets the Gravediggers and Other Short Stories. The album is very eerie and touches on more disturbing concepts than her usual work. Give it a try before playing it for guests, as it may not be everyone's cup of tea. But the thoughtful, creative stories teetering on the brink of insanity may be just what you need for a great Halloween soundtrack.

Conclusion

Halloween play lists should be fun for everyone. It's a celebration. Why not make it more fun by using some emerging music acts? There is plenty of horror themed music. This is just a launching pad for even more choices.
