New Star Wars MMORPG Being Developed

LucasArts and BioWare, a division of Electronic Arts Inc., announced in a press release on Oct. 21 their collaboration to develop a massively multiplayer online PC game to be called Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

What is an MMORPG?

An MMORPG is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game. Others already online are Runescape and the new AQWorlds. In an MMORPG players from all over the world can play simultaneously in a giant online land and time, potentially without end. The excitement and rise in popularity on such online games is due to the massive amount of interaction and variation involved. Players can call and meet friends online if they live across the street or across the globe. Live chat is often available as well and many games are moderated for safety.

Details of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic MMORPG

According to the press release, this new Star Wars MMORPG will feature exciting storytelling, battle and intelligent characters. In Star Wars: The Old Republic, players will explore an age thousands of years before the rise of Darth Vader. At this time, war between the Old Republic and the Sith Empire divides the galaxy.

In this role-playing game, players will be able to choose to play as Jedi, Sith, or other Star Wars character types. Each player will guide their character(s), making their own storyline and guiding their direction within the Force, be it on the light or dark side. There will be chances to make allies or enemies and interact with others.

What the Higher-Ups Have to Say About the New Online Game

Of the new game, Darrell Rodriguez, President of LucasArts, expressed his opinion that those at LucasArts feel the best setting for continuing the Star Wars franchise in a grand way was an online world, allowing people from all over the world to interact. He says "Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is the most critically acclaimed Star Wars game in LucasArts history and a preeminent example of our company's interactive storytelling heritage."

Dr. Greg Zeschuk, Co-Founder and V.P. of Development Operations, BioWare and V.P. Electronic Arts Inc. added that the new online game timeline is to be set roughly 300 years after the events of Knights of the Old Republic. This is a time not previously explored in the Star Wars saga.
