New Storage Uses for a Clothes Dresser

How to Turn a Dresser into Extra Storage for Your Home

C. Jeanne Heida
So, you have a chest of drawers you've tired off. Before carting that old dresser down to a thrift store, you might consider using it elsewhere in the home. Old dressers are practical bits of furniture that have all sorts of great uses besides storing clothes. Here's some ideas of how a dresser can boost your storage space in unusual ways.

Add bathroom storage. Short of storage space in the bathroom? A dresser can provide you with extra space in the bathroom for towels and beauty supplies while also providing you with a little extra counter space.

Use in the laundry room. Laundry room dressers are great for storing blankets, pet food, and patio supplies. The dresser top also doubles as a great place to store laundry baskets when they aren't being used.

To store and display a collection of table linens. Vintage dressers can look attractive in the kitchen, especially when used to showcase a collection of vintage tablecloths and other kitchen linens. To display my vintage kitchen linens, I'll pull out the drawers just enough so that a corner of the material can be folded over the drawer front.

For organizing crafting supplies. If you've got a hobby or sewing room, a dresser is a fantastic way to organize all your crafting supplies. Most dresser drawers are large enough to hold fabric and sewing supplies, skeins of yarn, scrap book supplies or jewelry making needs, art supplies, and more. Dollar store organizers can help prevent your craft supplies from rolling around the drawer.

As a TV stand. Instead of buying an entertainment cabinet, you can put that old dresser to good use as an entertainment stand. The top is large enough to hold almost any size of television with the drawers providing storage space for DVDs.

As a side board. I used to have a lowboy style of dresser that doubled as a sideboard in our dining room. The low surface was ideal for holding dishes and trays of food, and the drawers beneath worked well for storing silver and fancy table linens. For antique dressers, a custom cut piece of glass can protect the finish from damage.

For organizing tools in the garage. If your old dresser is just too far gone to use in the house, haul it out to the garage instead to organize your tools. Small hand tools, paint cans, tubes of caulk, sandpaper and nails are just a few examples of tools and hardware that fit neatly into a dresser drawer.
