New Super Mario Bros Video Game Review and What You Should Know

The New Super Mario Bros video game has no doubt attracted a great deal of interest, especially for anyone who was already a fan of the original series. It is rare to find a 2D platform in use today, due to the extreme popularity of the reality-based games that are greatly enhanced by three-dimensional graphic designs. But the New Super Mario Bros would actually be diminished in a 3D platform, because the side-scrolling functions that were so important to the feel of the original games is really part of the charm of the game itself.

Nostalgia being what it is, this review of the New Super Mario Bros video game is driven by an appreciation of the first Mario Bros offerings and all subsequent versions. Once again, Bowser Jr. has kidnapped the princess and Mario has to save the day. The same left-to-right action of the old series is used again here, with all of the head-jumping and level-hopping fun built in. Mario scurries and hops his way through a variety of worlds, both above ground and underground.

The chase is on, across the desert, under the sea and through a world of ice. There are new secret exits and alternate paths that can accelerate the player more quickly through the levels, if they can find them. There are eight levels in all and some players may prefer zooming through to rescue the princess while others may want to enjoy each of the levels for their unique graphics and challenges.

A discussion of graphics must be included in this New Super Mario Bros review. Nintendo has faithfully recreated the look and the feel of the original Mario Bros world. The very recognizable iconic characters are back for more fun and adventure and the bright colors and exaggerated object designs harkens back to the first NES game.

Nice features of the New Super Mario Bros game include some of the 3D

platforms that made Super Mario 64 such a hit. Mario can be pretty acrobatic when he needs to be, climbing and springing off walls to get over obstacles. Fire power is still basically a fireball and a butt stomp, but big and large mushroom power-ups change Mario from a big powerhouse for blasting walls to a tiny size for squeezing through pipes. A blue turtle power-up will allow Mario to slide along, mowing down enemies as he keeps up his incessant hunt for Bowser Jr. and the princess.
