When you consult the advice, experience and insight of other successful teachers, you're able to see your own strengths, weaknesses and career path much more clearly. It has the power to help you take enormous leaps and bounds in your teaching career.
People consult a coach when they want to overcome challenges. For example, coaches can help you set goals and create a realistic plan to achieve them. Coaches can help you with productivity challenges and help you create win/win relationships. As a teachers' diversity coach, I've had the pleasure to help new and veteran teachers build their ideal teaching career.
A mentor works much like a coach, however, mentors tend to have a step by step system they provide. It's not customized to fit you but rather to show you how they succeeded. The right mentor can be quite powerful.
The Harsh Reality of Schools Today
While statistics show that many new teachers are actively seeking out coaching or mentoring support in areas such as managing a classroom and lesson planning, this form of support is not always readily available. Other teachers may not feel comfortable asking for help. Today, many new teachers are working with tough teaching conditions with almost no form of support, causing them to feel even more frustrated and ineffective. Many schools do not even have a mentoring system in place.
When new teachers step into the classroom for the first time, they are usually shocked by the disconnect between what is being taught at the university and what is really happening in the classroom. Teachers need to be given the "how" instead of the theoretical "what." However, teacher education programs still have a long way to go in terms of preparing teachers for what is surely, one of the most difficult jobs in the world.
A Simple Yet Powerful Solution
Many teachers do not have the finances to pay for the services of a coach or a mentor. This is where a teacher's resource center or coaching club can be an ideal solution. It can offer coaching and mentoring resources and benefits all in one. Teachers can acces the membership site when the time best suits them and they can receive tremendous value for their dollar. Such services include coaching expertise and resources, mentorship from expert teachers who have successfully overcome the same classroom management issues new teachers are currently experiencing, and the support of a teacher coach to help them thrive in the classroom.
New and veteran teachers can also share their success stories and support others in their teaching journey. When teachers have the support of a coach, they can feel more connected to their students and strive even harder to succeed.
