New Teacher Tips: Keep Track of Your Time!

Dorit Sasson
Do you know how much material you need to fill a lesson or how to pace it?

Do you sometimes race through material?

Do you find yourself beating a topic to death?

In order to pace new material well, here are a few lesson planning tips-

First, spend a few lessons (1-2) teaching the core skills of the unit you want ALL the students to know. Understand those objectives.

If some of your students aren't ready, consider teaching new skills at a later point or differentiate them. (adapt the material to suit all types of learning groups)

Remember the 3 R's: review, reinforce and repeat. Once you've taught core skills, spend time reviewing and repeating them in fresh new ways.

The key is to balance teaching new material and review. Usually 1-2 review lessons is sufficient. You can also review the material at a later point, too like a sum-up of the unit.

Practice makes perfect.

So work it!
