Includes New Traffic Signal at Westbrook Place

WESTBROOK - Residents and visitors to Westbrook have already seen changes to town center and more are on the way.

Catherine Wininger, Chairman of the Westbrook Police Advisory/Traffic Authority Commission said that "we are only half way through this process."

Drivers have seen the installation of a new traffic signal at the intersection of Westbrook Place and Route 1 that has been blinking yellow for the past several weeks.

That light is expected to become fully operational by the State Traffic Commission before the end of February.

Boston Post Road adjacent to the Westbrook Green has become three lanes, one lane travelling from the east (Clinton) to the west (Old Saybrook), and two lanes travelling west to east.

Westbound traffic on Boston Post Road has a turning lane to access Westbrook Place which leads toward the Interstate 95 exit 65 interchange.

Traffic coming from the I-95 exit 65 interchange into town center will be able to bear right or left.

Bearing right will place drivers on Essex Road and they will only be allowed to make a right hand turn onto Route 1, toward Clinton, at the new stop sign which will replace the existing traffic light.

Bearing left will place drivers on Westbrook Place, which will be a two-way road which ends with a new traffic signal allowing drivers to turn left, right, or straight across the intersection into the driveway of the soon-to-open Walgreens Pharmacy.

Westbound traffic on Boston Post Road approaching town center will have a right turn only lane, which allows access to Westbrook Place, a straight through traffic lane, and a left turning lane into the Walgreens driveway.

Those visiting the businesses in town center can use parallel parking which is located on both sides of Essex Road and Westbrook Place.

A turning lane on Westbrook Place will allow northbound traffic to access Westbrook Deli and the municipal lot and also will allow drivers to turn onto Essex Road.

Parallel parking is no longer allowed along Boston Post Road in front of the green.

This spring, Wininger said that roads surrounding Westbrook Green will be repaved and permanent striping will be applied designating the lanes of travel.
