The construction of the new line will ultimately affect the entire valley. The results are expected to be similar to the results achieved by the first Trax line completed just before the 2002 Winter Olympics. It is expected to stimulate the businesses around the Trax line and create a ripple effect throughout the state's economy. Although for the next few years, construction on the line will hamper the growth of these businesses, eventually the project should pay huge dividends. The new line will cut through the heart of West Jordan. Attracting many new businesses and supporting many existing businesses. It will cross many important roads in West Jordan. Including 7800 S. and 9000 S., where there are many important retail businesses. Thus the new line has the potential to bring many shoppers from all over the valley to West Jordan.
The new line will also become increasingly important to West Jordan for many other reasons. The city continues to grow at an astonishing rate. These new citizens will put more and more demand on the highways and roads in the area. More efficient public transportation will help to alleviate this congestion. Additionally, many of the new residents may wish to use the quick light rail line because of increasing gas prices. The completion of this line as well as that of the other lines that are to be completed before 2015, will give the Salt Lake Valley a system of public transportation that can only be rivaled by larger cities. It is an investment in the future of Salt Lake.
The project won't be cheap. It will cost just over $2.5 billion. However the slumping economy has given good news to the tax payers of West Jordan. The new line is partially being supported by the stimulus package put together by President Obama, reducing the bill by $428 million. This reduction is approximately 20% the cost tax payers had been expecting to pay just a year ago.
The conclusion of this project will help West Jordan to become one of the state's greatest economic powerhouses. It already has over 100,000 residents and is the fourth largest city in the state. But with the new light rail line the growth of the city should explode.
