New to Ubuntu? How to FTP in This Operating System

Lance Esondi
When you switch over from Windows to a Linux operating system like Ubuntu, things will be a bit confusing at first. You won't have all the same tools and solutions that you are used to making it a bit frustrating at times. If you have a need to FTP with Ubuntu, there are solutions for you that are fairly easy so that you can get back to the tasks that you need to be doing.

There are many applications that you can be using but one of the best ones to consider is Filezilla. It's free. It's open source. Many Windows users use this software making the transition almost seamless as the Linux version is almost the exact same.

Ubuntu keeps Filezilla updated in the package manager. Use synaptic or the newer software center and do a search for Filezilla. Once you find and select it, it should download and install on it's own.

You are going to find this application under the Applications button under Internet. You should see the icon with a red background and an "FZ" out in the front.

When the program launches, it's fairly easy to use. Start off with the very first icon on the top left to get started. This is where you will add a new connection and any login and password information that it might have. Once you have this entered successfully a simple double click will connect you to the server.

There are many different windows that show you your computer's files and the server's files. The left side has your computer's files while the right side of the screen shows what's on the server.

For simplicity, you can simply drag and drop the files and folders from one to another just like you would in any file management software.

Those who have used FTP before will find that using Filezilla in Ubuntu is a very easy transition to make from anything they might have used before on Windows.
