Cosmetic surgery techniques will continue to be available as demand for newer and better procedures grows. People who received facelifts, these surgeries were performed using a scalpel. In the future, this procedure will be done with lasers, which will be quicker and have less scarring. It may take decades, but the possibilities in plastic and cosmetic surgery will be close to endless. Creation of living tissue in a laboratory setting is used to replace damaged or diseased body parts.
Growing and reproduction of skin grafts, muscle, breast tissue, cells from vital organs and even nerves, are just ahead in the medical future. The science is still in its early stage, and there is no doubt the cosmetic and reconstructive surgery will have tissue engineering at its core in the future. There are new procedures available and others that will become available in the future.
Artecoll is used to treat wrinkles and was used in Europe since 1989. Artecoll is an injection. This injection of microscopic plastic beads is suspended in collagen and then injected into the area needing treatment. The body then absorbs the injected collagen, and the tiny beads trigger the body to produce collagen, which keeps the cycle of collagen production permanent. When the collagen depletes, these beads tell the body to produce more.
Botox procedures are on the rise but for some people it is not strong enough, or it does not last long. For some people it may not even be an option, due to their resistance to the botulinum toxin. Patients who receive the botox injection are most likely have to return for that procedure at least four times a year. There is a new procedure called botulinum toxins type B, also known as Myobloc. Myobloc is given in a bigger dosage than botox, but the effects are more immediate and they last longer. Dysport is a botulinum toxin type A; it is also given in a larger does than botox. Patients who receive this procedure only return twice a year to have the procedure done again. The FDA for cosmetic surgery does not yet approve these two procedures, and they carry the same risk as botox.
Restylane and Hylaform are injectables used for treating wrinkles. Restylane is a synthetic form of hyaluronic acid and has shown to last up to a year. Hylaform derived from hyaluronic acid of rooster combs can last from three to six months.
Radiance is a substance found in human bones and teeth, it is an injectable paste used to fill folds, and to enlarge the lips. There is little chance of allergic reaction because it is derived from human tissue. The FDA for cosmetic treatment does not approve this procedure. Some of these procedures are not available, although they will be available in the future.
