New Wedding Cake Trends

Patterns, Texture, and Buffets Are in Style for Your Reception

According to TheKnot.com, the new wedding cake trends include patterns, textures, and cake buffets. While patterns and textures may not seem that different, the overall look of the cakes they are featuring indicate a change from the bold and over-the-top detail, to classic and simple adornments.

Patterns, Textures, and Designs

Consider a more simple cake design and adorn it with simple, yet dramatic elements such as patterns, textures, and stamped designs.

A new trend according to TheKnot.com is the use of graphic sugar appliques. No more big sugar flowers, we are talking more abstract designs like paisley, starbursts, and lace cutouts. If you are looking for inspirational design, look to other elements of your wedding -- a detail in your dress, the design of your invites, or a pattern that is repeated elsewhere in your wedding.

Creative stamped patterns are another up and coming trend. The cake bakeries are using edible dye and a stamp to create a repetitive pattern on the tiers. Look for more simple designs - perhaps a pattern or even something like a monogram. There are services where you can create custom stamps if you want something that is truly one-of-a-kind.

Have you seen the elegant chandelier design that is taking center stage in invitations, craft stores, scrapbooking, and other papercrafts? Well, this simple design is a new trend in wedding cakes as well. The hanging chandelier motif on your tiers is elegant, without being over the top. This is a great way to tie in a black and white wedding, without the use of black fondant all over the cake.

Elegant, retro patterns often seen in lace and ruffles are making their way onto wedding cakes as well. Remember that beautiful doily that was passed down from generation to generation? Consider replicating the textural pattern in your cake by the use of ruffles and other elements like eyelets for a vintage and classic look.

And speaking of retro, retro designed cakes are in. From 1920's flapper designs to the funky 1950's, anything goes. Retro designs are virtually endless because you can choose a more classic design or go all out and design a cake featuring edible pearls and sugar feathers.

Cake Buffets

It took a long time before many people accepted the idea of deviating from the standard tiered wedding cake to do cupcakes, and now cake buffets are the new trend. This is a great way to really express your individualism by a presentation of coordinating cakes. Each cake can feature a slightly different design, different flavors, and can provide a very dramatic table presentation.

Middle Tier Treatments

If you are still looking for something different, but don't want to deviate from the traditional tiered cake? TheKnot.com says one of the new trends is middle tier treatments. Rather than doing all the design work on the top tier, consider moving the decorations to the middle tier. If done right, the design has the potential to create a much more visually engaging cake display.
