For the past five years Dan Buettner has been taking teams of scientists into blue zones - five pockets of the world where people live the longest, healthiest lives. No, they don't all drink protein shakes, eat carb free fare or hit the gym every day. But scientists have revealed that they do all share nine common healthy habits that we can all aspire to mimic in our own lives. They call these habits the Power9 - we're calling it just plain cool. For the secret to leading a long, healthy life, read on:
1. Move naturally. Skip that trip to the gym and instead be active without thinking about it. Bike instead of drive - or better yet, walk! Researchers found that nearly half of all centenarians they spoke with take a walk every day.
2. Cut calories by 20 percent. Take time to sit and enjoy meals - eating while relaxed and not on the go will help you to eat less. Use smaller plates, bowls and glasses.
3. Eat a plant-based diet. While it isn't necessary to ditch your carnivorous ways completely, be sure to increase your daily consumption of fruits and veggies.
4. Drink red wine. No, this isn't free license to become a self-professed wino - but enjoying 2 servings or less of red wine per day can be beneficial. Sardinian canonau wine has the world's highest levels of antioxidants.
5. Determine your life's purpose. What do you truly enjoy doing? Knowing and practicing your life's purpose can add many good years to your life.
6. Destress. Relieve your stresses and indulge in relaxation - even if you have to schedule it into your day.
7. Belong/actively participate in a spiritual community. Explore new spiritual or religious traditions or deepen your existing spiritual commitment.
8. Make family a priority. Get back to your roots and put family first.
9. Pick the right tribe. Surround yourself by others who share the same Blue Zone values.
