New Year's

M Cobb
Th air was a cold chill.
It was griping,
seeping in through the heaters
of the car that had ceased to
work properly about a month ago.

She couldn't think of what to do
when she saw the bright lights coming towards her.
She didn't see them until it was
too late, she tried to swerve, to miss it-
crash.

The grinding of the metal,
of car frame hitting car,
the chill of the air coming in
from windows broken,
made her think of that night.

she stood outside, in Time's
Square, excited, bouncing, eying the ball.
She turned and faced the love of her life,
asked him,

What do you have picked out,
for your resolution?

He replied,
To give you this.
He pulled out a ring.

She thought of how she expected a
happily ever after
kind of life, but what she got
was a car crash,
a year after that beautiful ball dropped.
