New Year's Day is always the best day of the year for college football fans, and 2011 was no exception as there were six college bowl games on today's schedule. In the two BCS bowl matchups TCU beat Wisconsin 21-19 in a classic Rose Bowl game and Oklahoma romped over Connecticut 48-20 in the Fiesta Bowl.

In the first bowl game of the day Texas Tech started off the year on a winning note, beating Northwestern in the TicketCity Bowl by a score of 45-38 in an offensive shootout. Red Raiders QB Taylor Potts threw for 369 yards and 4 TDs (1 INT) and ran for one in the win. Nick Saban's Alabama boys also bounced back in a big way, destroying hapless Michigan State 49-7 in the Capital One Bowl. Mississippi State crushed Michigan in the Gator Bowl, probably marking coach Rich Rodriguez's last game with the Wolverines. Florida beat Penn State in the Outback Bowl to send coach Urban Meyer off as a winner.
