I got up very early, around 6am or so to make the final touches of decorations, horns, the right records to dance to, called all my friends to make certain who was coming to my party, who needed a ride to my house or home. I had saved for my first beautiful dress that was silk and flowed like a dream. I even wore makeup for the very first time. I bought non alcoholic beverages and lined them up on our cart table back in the corner away from the dancing spot in the middle of our garage. Streamers were flowing from the rafters, plenty of chairs, it was a go, everything ready. I did a great job and was so pleased.
My boyfriend promised he would be there thrity minutes early to greet guests and make sure if anyone needed a ride he would go and get them. He would greet them at the front door and I would walk them to our garage. It worked out great, he and I looked great together, both in blue, he in a jazzy suit and me in my new silk dress. More guests came than RSVP's but that was okay because he and I had planned on that and just in case we bought extra everything.
We danced and sang and all having a wonderful time just being teenagers and trying to follow parents rules, the best we could. We even ate dinner without a problem, cars were showing up and parking where we told them, and everyone was respectful; not to loud but just right with the music. I was so happy that my first ever party was so great that I almost felt totally a grown woman.
As the night progressed the food tables were needing fill ups and my boyfriend Sam and I took turns going into the refrigerator and bringing out what was needed. We danced and laughed and had a great time being grown up with approval from everyone. I thought geeze; I love being responsible and doing everything in order, cleaning, fixing food, hanging decorations and was so thankful my family showed me how to give a great party.
We were even allowed to turn the lights off and turn the spotlight on when we started the countdown with the folks on the TV. I turned around at the right moment at the strike of midnight and I kissed who I thought was my boyfriend but when the lights came on it was a guy that I did not know in a blue suit just like Sam's. I was horrified and began to tear up and then realized everyone was laughing at me including my boyfriend and this stranger; so I laughed with them.
My boyfriend told me later that as I turned toward him I bumped this girl and spilled something on her dress; she was the date of f the guy I had wrongly kissed about 3 seconds before Midnight. Sam had ran over to the clean up table tto get a wash cloth for her to clean the ginger ale off of her brand new party dress. She was standing behind me- next to her boyfriend and I was standing in front of her boyfriend waiting for Sam to kiss me with my eyes closed . I turned and saw a blue suit and kissed the wrong guy on New Year's.
Honestly I thought it was Sam so I hugged and kissed him for Happy New Year's Eve then realized it was not Sam, it was a guy named Charles. It truly is a funny memory now; after all these years later but back then- I was mortified that I kissed the wrong guy on my First New Year's Eve party in 1962
