New Year's Eve Party Ideas & Themes

Bye 2010, Hello 2011!

Lori Lane
It's time to party like it's 2012 as New Year's Eve rolls out 2010 and New Year's Day welcomes 2011. But are the procrastinators prepared? Here's a quick party theme guide for that last minute 2010 New Year's Eve parties, beginning with the obvious.

Local themes prove successful in most New Year's Eve parties. Raleigh, North Carolina has First Night where a 1,200 pound acorn drops at countdown. Better an acorn than a pickle, and a sweet pickle it is. Mt. Olive in North Carolina celebrates the coming of the New Year by dropping a glowing pickle from a flagpole. New York has the nations highest number in ratings all around while the Crystal Ball drops in Times Square. Moments that can turn a New Year's Eve party into more than just your average New Year's Eve gathering.

For Raleigh an acorn, Mt. Olive the pickle or New York a disco ball, the question remains - what drops in your neighborhood on seconds before the stroke of midnight? No matter what it is it can always be used as a center focal point of a theme.

Other New Year's Eve themes can include the Father Time theme. Anything having to do with time marks the denominator from clock decor on napkins to a standing clock on each table and timeless music playing in the background such as "Moonlight Serenade" by Glenn Miller and Mitchell Parish. Auld Lang Syne is best played at the stroke of midnight.

Auld Lang Syne shares the lyrics "Should old acquaintance be forgotten, and never brought to mind? Should old acquaintance be forgotten, and days of long ago!" Defined as questionable by some for the string cutting lyrics but favored by many as one of history's finest New Year's songs of tradition.

Bring in the numbers by celebrating the digits - 2011. 2011 party hats along with other items that display 2011 can be found at your local craft stores or party supply stores. In this New Year's Eve party theme it is all about time. And that is something we are all running out of when it comes to New Year's Eve 2010.

From a winter wonderland snow theme, a rock and roll theme, August in New Years theme to a silver and gold theme, going green theme or an old-fashioned theme, using a theme can perk a New Year's Eve party up. Don't give guests the same old routine or something expected. Give them a splash of festive spice. Give them something to remember 2010 by.

Nice! In L.A. it's likely bullets that drop to the ground but local law enforcement has already advised hooligans that shooting guns into the air will be met with shot signature technology, which will dispatch cops to the scene. Would-be bad guys are warned.
