New Year's Eve Party Tips

With Christmas just around the corner, now is the perfect time to start planning those New Year's Eve parties. A good thing to have is a binder or notebook to keep track of what you have bought, what you have, and where it all is. There is nothing like digging through three closets for your party supplies that will have you screaming in frustration. Use the notebook to keep a running list of what you need. You might be surprised what slips your mind during this time of year. Its also good to keep track of what your guests loved, what worked...and what fell flat.

Decorations - There are many ways you can decorate for New Years, from the traditional banner to more unique things. You could use streamers, and beads as hanging decorations. Alcohol scented candles are great for New Year's parties, especially mixed drink ones (ex. strawberry daiquiri). Arrange them on a silver platter with some river rocks or loose beads from the craft section of most chain stores. And don't underestimate the power of your Christmas decorations! String more lights up around doorways or archways, use some garland as a streamer, the possibilities are endless! Don't forget about things like balloon drops, if you don't mind balloons or the mess.

Party Favors - Give something memorable. But don't break the budget. Many party supply stores and major retailers have little party favors just for New Years. If you go that route, try to find something well made, and that goes with your party. One idea is to allow your guests to take home their hats, noisemakers, and a votive in a cute holder that matches the candles you were burning. Try to be creative here.

Create a mix cd before hand, if there is music at your party. Then you are free to decorate, move any furniture and cook the day before or the day of, without having to stay up late to get ready. Use your tv as a backdrop, even if you do not plan on watching the ball drop, a good black and white movie will prevent it from looking like a black hole in your room. You can turn the sound off so it doesn't interfere with any music.

Be safe! Ensure your guests have a way home if they have imbibed too much alcohol. Call them a cab if you live somewhere with cab service, or designate someone as a shuttle. Make sure they don't mind doing it first. A good possibility is the person who doesn't drink. Keep candle flames away from streamers and other decorations, especially paper. Also keep any flames on a stable surface away from obvious hazards like Christmas trees.

Have a happy and safe New Years!
